I find it amusing that when someone seems to have trouble with a new train item they first get on this forum and rant. Then many others chime in and trash the manufacture. I just received my Lionchief universal remote. I have two Lionchief sets under my tree. (The Hallmark set and the Frosty set) At least for me, the remote picked up on both of these set right away and works as advertised. I hope this will help some of you that canceled an order or hesitated to buy one. I am aware that this remote does not work on some of the more basic Lionchief but for me, so far so good.

Your information helps. I think only the early starter sets will not see the remote. Beyond that I love this thing. It also locks out any other remote when you are running the train. Great item.
I think Captaincog has it above. That is what I remember Lionel saying as well, that it was a few early sets that would not work with the LC/LC+ universal remote. I don't remember if they ever said which sets or how many, but I got the impression is was a pretty small number of them.
As for the rants here, personally I read them, but they don't usually sway my purchases and I have never cancelled an order because of one. I figure that 3 or 4 folks ranting here is an extremely small percentage of the items actually sold, so a lot of them must have worked. There are also a lot of folks that buy trains, but don't participate on the OGR forum so we have no idea how their products are working or not working for them.
Also, I don't think we often hear from the folks that have good working items that have caused them no problems, like Grampstrains has posted above. I have accumulated quite a few trains over the last few years and I have had very few problems. Only one item had to go back to the factory for repair out of everything I have. Everything else was minor and I was easily able to fix these few things myself. They were a lot less trouble to fix than they would have been to re-box and ship back for repair, and a lot cheaper too.
