The early UP 1939 #1 & 2 coal turbines are interesting-looking beasts. I realise the M-1000 has been done in repro tinplate, but have the round-nose turbine units been done by anybody? The Overland HO models are real beauties.
The GE steam turbine electrics were actually oil fired with very modern high pressure flash boilers. They ran on the UP and were put in storage by GE after suffering frequent failures. The Great Northern leased them during WW II. They made 14 trips between Spokane and Wenatchee, Wa with GE technicians on board. They were returned to GE and scrapped. I found this video of them in operation, rare stuff!
AFIK, no one has made them in 3 rail. They would be interesting, although the similarly styled the City of Los Angeles and City of San Francisco E2s might be more popular.
Yeah, UP's turbines, all except the coal and the propane turbine, were oil fired. They had only the one coal turbine - a monster, and ultimately, a dang impractical, difficult to maintain monster.
But it did look cool. This is the MTH from around 2009. I have one and it is by far the biggest loco I have. More than ten inches longer than any steamer.
