There has been a recent thread about this car. MTH issued the car with all four doors painted yellow. In the flag presentation portion on this car, the yellow door looks out of place. So many of us have had two of the doors painted to blend in with the flag (as it is in on the 1 to 1 car).

Within the past day, I have had two Forum members ask me to photograph the painted door on my car so that it can be used as a guide to repaint their models. They both now have the photos.

If there any others who are interested in having their models painted, perhaps these photos will help.

Just my opinion on the $350 sale: it was a fluke.  A couple of people were bidding on it that really wanted it and drove the price up.  I was also bidding on it and it got stupid in the end.

I never base train prices off of auction web sites.  2 bidders who really want an item will raise the price well above market value.

Prior to that one sale, the ones I looked at were in the $150 or less range.

I've said my piece, good luck to those searching.  PTC, sorry I hi-jacked your thread, I apologize and thank you for posting the great pictures.

It is such a beautiful car.

If anything, having the door painted to blend in with the flag pattern should add value to this piece, not take away from it.

Lee is correct, it is a beautiful car and really adds to a UP Lightweight passenger train. I liked it so much, I actually purchased two. The combination of the red-white & blue and the yellow body of the car are a perfect blend.

I sure hope that if you have this car and want to paint the door, the photos will help you.

I had purchased 4 of these and had all painted as well. I don't know if the gentleman who painted my 4 is still doing this mod. This was done in August of 2009. Very reasonable and quick turnaround. He just wanted the body and the doors to save weight and thus lowering shipping costs. As you can see all 4 doors were done on mine as per the prototype I believe.

First off UP Baggage #5779 did not get paint with the flowing flag until late 2008, early 2009.  So as such this car really was not use as a revenue front end baggage car.  To the best of my knowledge seeing pictures and videos it was used as a mid-consist concession car on excursion trips.

Also on the prototype the "blue field" ended about 2 or 3-feet before the door.  And the red & white stripes continued about a full door's width beyond the other door.  Now since our MTH car is not of prototypical 1:48 length (18/19-inchs vs. 22/22 1/2-inches) we don't/can't get a realistic flowing flag paint pattern.

Because of the above info I decided not to paint over the door with blue field. I run car as mid-consist concession car with doors open and safety guards in place like concession cars I have ridden in and have seen pictures/videos of 5779.

Agreed.  One of the reasons I ordered it.

I know the aux tender isn't exactly the prototype, but it's good enough for me.

Someday I'll make an accurate one out of brass, for now it works and will look incredible with the baggage car.  I am really excited for it to arrive.
