I just finished this upgrade and thought it would be nice to share. It’s a basic ERR upgrade with Cruise commander , electric sounds , electro couplers, and full LED lighting. I decided to add flickering LED lights to the pantographs for a nice touch. Although it can’t match up to Lionel’s , it still came out pretty nice.

Thanks , Alex

Hay Alex,

Nice touch! I had always wanted to do a Williams GG-1 of my own, and I think you have pushed me over the edge. Bought a 4 inch X 6 inch porcelain sign at a Railroadiana show quite awhile ago and it sits in front of my computer. It says "11,000 Volts " on it, and the back of the sign has the # 4809 of the "G" it came off of. I guess the dream is coming to fruition as soon as I get one. I like the fact that the gold stripes are the earlier version of the model. Since York is close, I now know what to put on my list! Unfortunately for me, I've had to devote a lot of time into fixing up some areas of the house, and complete some projects around here. Want to get out of "Joisey".

Hi Alex, I am fairly new to O gauge but did just get a Williams GG1 at an auction after reading a review in the magazine (it goes with my Union Station DC layout plans).  I have a legacy controller and would also like to upgrade with an ERR kit.  Any advice on which kit to use and how hard it was to integrate?  I would be happy to get it on the legacy system first.  Your LED pantographs are very cool but I may not have time for that

Don could you please post links to the videos on ERR installs?  Or let me know what search terms you used?

Thanks!

Thank you Jackson, I will order the err boards now and wait on the electro couplers.  I have an EM-1 with the electro coupler and that is a really neat feature.  So will see if Alex replies about putting those on.

I laughed at your biline there.  Love the reference to the Great Eastern (Got some experience with it playing Railroad Tycoon) and the cartel reference as well.  I am a CEO and my favorite definition of CEO is that you do whatever is necessary for your employees to succeed, from taking out the garbage to paying them.  Everything.  Happy CEOing on the NSG Eastern!

Hi Robbin,

Sorry took long to reply ,currently away on vacation. Here’s what you need…

ERR CRUISE COMMANDER KIT

ERR EP GG1 ELECTRIC SOUNDS

AS FOR COUPLERS , can’t remember the length of them , but you would need a Lionel electro coupler. My guess for length between 1.75 - 2.0.

Alex

Here's a post from long ago, I did this nine or ten years ago.  I looked at the couplers, nothing special I had to do to these, the real trick was the old William's semi-scale one I did even earlier, that one took some real doing to get electrocouplers installed!

Electric RR Co upgrade for Williams GG1

I just unboxed this one from a few years languishing away in a closet.  Still runs like when I first did the upgrade.

I added a simple cab and automatic cab lights and Rule-17 lighting using a little hand assembled motion sensor module.  I've since committed a better version of that motion sensor module to a PCB for easier builds.
