I was given an MTH Allegheny 2-6-6-6, 20-3017-1 engine to check out.  I was told it was upgraded.  Well it appears it was upgraded for Lionel operation.  I'm not sure what I have so I opened the tender and took a couple of pictures of the electronics.  I haven't opened up the engine and would prefer not to in order to figure out what all of this is.

Wondering if anyone can tell me if this is an ERR upgrade of some type?  If so, how do you operate this engine? I do see a switch on bottom of engine that may be a Run/Program switch but it is not labeled. 20230819_11152020230819_111534Note I do have a Legacy control system and a few Legacy engines.

This is an engine from someone that recently passed away.  It was given to me by family to check out what they have and potentially sell for them if I didn't want it.  I also have an M-1 turbine to look over and a Berkshire; all previous PS1 Premier.  When I checked the berk it was missing all the electronics, but still had some wiring, motor with tach strip and reader, speaker.  I haven't checked turbine yet.

On Allegheny, all of the traction tires are cracked or missing, so suspect hasn't been used in a while.  I think I will first follow John's advice and see if I can get this working; it is a beautiful engine in very nice condition.  I only have one loop I could run this so I'm not likely to keep it.

Thanks for the feedback and recommendations.

Unless you want to spend hundreds of dollars, I'd just see if I could get the TAS TMCC installation working.

Interesting seeing GRJ's comment. I remember years ago when I ran into Mike Reagan at a show, and I mentioned my thoughts of replacing TAS TMCC/EOB with ERR on an engine of mine. He gave me a sharp look and said "Why?"

In other words, the TAS TMCC/EOB is just fine, why would you want to replace it? Of course this was his baby, but, at least back then, he thought it was a perfectly good system and there was no reason to replace it. Things may have changed since then, but maybe not so much.

I still have several EOB equipped engines, but I make no secret of the fact that I prefer the ERR boards.  However, the question is, do you prefer them to the tune of $290 + installation!  Current MSRP of the ERR Cruise Commander is $159.95 and the RailSounds Commander is $129.95.  By the time you pay for installation of the ERR boards, you're easily at over $500 for a diesel, and even more to get chuffing smoke, etc on a steamer.
