I picked up this engine at the TCA deaccession sale at the TCA Museum.  I don't believe that it has any of the Proto 1 problems as it was put on a test track and the sounds and lights came up without any "clunks, clinks, clanks" etc. (no, we didn't try changing directions or anything else with it).   What would my options be to bring this engine's technology into the 21st century?  I'm also curious what the difference is between the engines with an LP suffix and a -1 suffix.

Thanks

If the engine runs well in PS-1 I would not upgrade it because you must remove all the electronics and install new electronics because PS-1 was mainly a sound system and had no engine control. PS-2 is a completely different system and must be installed from square one and then run to the engine's motor.

You might be able to upgrade to Lionel's TMCC system cheaper then MTH's PS-2 or PS-3 system.

Actually, for steamers, the PS/3 is probably a bit cheaper if you want good smoke capability.  The PS/3 upgrade kit has pretty much all you need and the pieces all retail for around $230 or so.  If you want to upgrade a PS/1 locomotive to TMCC with chuffing smoke, you need not only the ERR stuff at around $200, but also something to generate the chuff and also to control the smoke chuffing.  I actually do both types of upgrades, so I'm pretty familiar with exactly what is needed for each. For diesel upgrades, it's pretty much of a wash as far as prices between PS/3 or TMCC upgrades.
