I am planning my first O Gauge layout (had HO when I was a kid).  This layout will be a family project (kids from age 2 to 8) and while I would like it to look nice the budget is limited and realism is not a high priority.  For track I am trying to decide between traditional Lional O-31 tubular or Gargraves.

I like the look of the Gargraves track, but the Gargraves and Ross switches are pretty expensive.  Would it be a good or bad idea to use Lionel 022 switches (I have a few of these and can get more for a reasonable price) with Gargraves track?  I know Gargraves makes adapter pins, and also that the track height is different.

I have read different things about the height difference between Gargraves and O-31.  Is it 1/8" or 1/4"?  If it's 1/4", I could use 1/4" roadbed under the Gargraves and nothing under the switches.  If it's 1/8", then 3/16" roadbed under the Gargraves and 1/16" cork sheet under the switches?  I'm not sure how perfect the match has to be.

I would appreciate any advice about roadbed for mixed track heights, and also any general advice about this (like: don't do it, it sounds like a good idea but it will be a huge pain!).

Another thing to remember is that Gargraves track all 3 rails are electrically separated from each other, the outside rails don't connect electrically with each other like Lionel or K-Line tubular track. Also buy some insulating pins for Gargraves track. Also may want to buy some Gargraves track power connectors for use with Gargraves track, I have tried using a Lionel track power clip with Gargraves track but it looks ugly when done because I had to cut the cross ties for the track.

Use a level with the 022 switches and Gargraves track to make sure the track is level or you may have constant derailments.

I am not sure of the curve size with Gargraves 032(they don't make 031) but I think it is 32.5 inches verses Lionel's 31 inches. Gargraves 042 curves are about half an inch larger then Lionel curves.

Years ago, I built a Christmas Layout using Gargraves flex and sectional track with Lionel 022 switches.

I glued down Midwest cork roadbed under the Gargraves and used nothing under the Lionel switches and Lionel operating tracks and it worked perfectly from a height standpoint.

The conversion pins that Gargraves offers worked great as well.
