We have used a variety of means to simulate the changing illumination levels and qualities to reflect the course of the day. Has anyone tried using variable color temperature LED bulbs to perform this task?

Well, kinda-sorta.

In the process of adding my home-brew thunder and lightning simulation to the layout (since replaced with the original BLI version when it became available again), I bought a color changing wifi-controlled LED bulb, with the intent to link it into Alexa control in order to create an Alexa voice-controlled 'routine' to change the lighting scenario before initiating a thunder and lightning show, and restore normal light levels after the 'storm' passes.

For reasons still unclear, I wasn't ever able to get the LED's software to 'talk' to Alexa (and still haven't), so I have to go into the bulb's app to change its lighting color and intensity. In fact, the only use I sometimes make of it now is to turn off the layout's general lighting and turn on a 'twilight' setting for the LED bulb, to simulate nighttime or twilight lighting.
