Matt,

I haven't printed any labels at home.  The distribution center has two PC's on a side counter to input your data: after clicking complete, it prints a small 2" square piece of paper that you give to the person at the check out counter and they measure and weigh the package and print off the main label.  I mention to the people at the counter how much cheaper it is at their main center and they say most people don't know about that.

Another consideration.....do not ship via any UPS Store that is not a real UPS facility.  The stores are privately owned and can and do charge much higher rates than going to UPS directly.  I called UPS and asked them about the price differences and confirmed that the stores do charge a significant premium over and above regular UPS rates.

Shipping a 14 lb locomotive to a CA buiness from me = $74 ....."

Just a quick question.  Is that $11 the actual cost of postage on the package,  or what you were charged by the sender?  I ask because businesses often absorb some of the shipping costs, and charge you less than their actual cost.  Charles Ro is an example, in my experience.  May not be the case here, but it could account for some, but by no means all of the disparity.

It's what I was charged.
