This set brand new in the 80's was around $650.   Now you can find them for around $350 - $400 slightly used on Ebay.

I will begin selling my brother's AF collection in about 6 months.  He passed away several months ago and the proceeds will go to his wife  (about $3,000 worth).   Of course, I get to play with them until then, and also get to cherry pick the best pieces.

Smoke Stack--to get the 80s Flyonel to work right, you usually have to play with the electronics some; my NP Flyonel starts with a jerk, and if any of the cars are on a curve, they derail. I think the fix will be simple, but that will have to wait until my layout is built. Also, then I will have to change out the die-cast couplers for plastic ones so the cars and engines don't short-circuit when the paint wears off the die-cast couplers (another instance of 3 rail folks not understanding 2-rail technology). So, keep your mantra going (unless you see a Y-3 run!!)
Yes, very true, but if one is in the market for such stuff, one needs to be armed with the reality of operating them. The original runs of the Daylight engines were with ACG style open-frame motors, and require their own (read, made of unobtainium) reverse units. There are work-arounds though.
