Hi everyone I’ve had the new vision line big boy with a depleting call load number 4014. I have been running the locomotive with TMCC control, and I only have the cab one and remote 1L. My first question is, does anybody even notice the force coupler effect? it’s so subtle I don’t even notice it no matter how many cars I’m pulling. At least it doesn’t make a difference whether you’re pulling zero cars or 15 scale size cars. Maybe I need more to notice.
More concerning has been my issues with the locomotive smoke units. The blowdown smoke and whistle smoke seem to function flawlessly. However, the stack smoke is barely noticeable and diminishes  totally after a couple minutes of use. I initially add 20 drops to the main stack., and tend to refresh it with 10 drops. The main stack smoke is just anemic Even worse the valve pop off smoke is so abundant that it is hosing down my whole locomotive with fluid and makes so much smoke that it seems to be coming out from underneath the cap with the controls also. This effect is totally unusable. I usually put the recommended 10 drops in the pop off smoke unit. I guess the main reason to purchase this locomotive was for its unique smoke effects but I’ve been pretty disappointed. IMG_4295Does anybody on here know how I can control the pop off smoke without completely soaking my whole locomotive? Or is that an effect that I’ll just have to turn off completely? Also, is there anyway to get a noticeable amount of smoke out of the stack? I’ve  seen a few people running these big boys in videos, and I haven’t seen one of them that has impressive or even noticeable  stack smoke at all, especially after it’s run for more than two minutes. Any help would be would be grateful. Thank you so much.

without the legacy vision line remote you can't control the special effects! I have the Niagara Vision line that was the first one with force coupler effect, as the engine pulls the car on a hill; then the more cars will increase chuffing sounds! it's a pretty cool feature, I thought only the Niagara had the force couple effect! the Niagara also had popoff effect which automatically pops off while the engine is at idle!

also sounds like you're putting in too much fluid!

You should be able to hear the difference with the force coupler,  with engine moving slowly hold the tender back with your hand.  The chuff should deepen.  Fyi the force coupler is not actually the coupler, rather its on the draw bar of the locomotive.  I think they should call it something else, because has nothing to do with the actual coupler.

I noticed my main stack was a little weak when it came to smoke. Anxiously I added more smoke fly and it’s much better. Always worried about adding too much fluid

Have you seen the size of a dual Lionel smoke unit?? If you actually saw the massive size- even compared to the typical bottle of smoke- your concept of overfilling it should be free from your mind.

The smaller smoke units, stay within limits, but the big units on most every large legacy steam especially when main and whistle steam or other effect is the dual unit- 20 drops is not even beginning to add fluid.

I cite this https://ogrforum.com/...-legacy-tmcc-engines

and also see the size https://www.lionelsupport.com/...02-DUAL-SMOKE-LEGACY

Keep in mind the size of the motor and impeller and there are 2 of them side by side.

SMOKE UNIT IMPELLER / .430" DIAM

So let's estimate the unit is 1 inch square in the cup area. If it was 1 inch cube, that is 16.387064mL, however the depth is say 1/4 inch we can use and fill. 1/4 of the volume is 4ml.

I've seen estimates that say 20 drops is 1mL. I'm just trying to show rough math and estimations, why 40 drops is not an unreasonable amount given the size and capacity of a known dual unit. Even if the wick takes up some volume, again, 2mL of fluid in a guestimate, should not result in an overfill, even if the smoke unit had some in it before filling.

Yes, 100%, on an individual aux smoke unit, the chamber is smaller and so yes, a smaller and more careful fluid fill.

Typical OGSU unit used for some individual smoke features do to mounting location and distances not practical for dual unit.

Hi Tom, i’ve tried running it real slow and don’t hear much of a difference. But next time I run trains, I’ll try holding a tender back a little with my hand and see if that makes a difference. I did realize that the effect is on the drawbar and not the coupler. I made sure of that before I ordered it because I put Kadees  on everything. Thanks for your help. Joe

I tried holding my tender while big boy going slowly and didn’t really hear a difference. Hopefully that doesn’t mean it’s not working.

Do you have the function enabled? It is a function that has an ON/OFF programming option in the previous Legacy version of this engine.
