I posted about my comments some time back, saying that I thought it was a superb toy locomotive product, but that I thought it was ugly (still do).  Please note that I ordered it with the intent of repainting it in UP gray and black and relabeling it UP.  Yeah, I know . . .  but it will happen - it's just been delayed by my need to build shelves to keep my locos, including the J.

---- Mine had no flaws or problems out of the box.  Good paint and great detail on graphics and tiny print here and there.  Very good cab interior, etc.  I run only conventional and in that mode with a Zw-L it fired up as it should.  All the lights, features, bells, whistle, and sound worked. I tested smoke only briefly (wife hates it) but that seemed adequate.  It runs smoothly and, particularly with the ZW-L powering it, very slowly but smoothly if I want.  Good strong pull.  GREAT sound - Lionel is on a roll as regards sound and this one is good  . .  . very good.

But I thought, and still think, it is butt ugly.  I know, its an iconic loco.  Sorry, but its proportions just look wrong to me: drivers smaller than I'd like, and with the streamlining shroud higher and therefore overall looking like a squat little loco with tiny wheels.  Yeah, I'm exaggerating a bit - it's a matter of degrees, but it is an "esthetically challenged" locomotive.  If you like the look, then buy it: it is a superb loco.  Mine is a jewel as far as quality, sound, and running.
