Hello all
...the "toy train" world was eager to expand a Christmas based novelty to a year round hobby / passion ...yes to sell more product .
Lionel Magazine was introduced in 1931 promoting all the wonders of model Railroading ...with many articles for readers to build and empire of their own inspired by others creativity.
Warren Reinhard of New Jersey was a regular author with articles on all aspects of layout building including modifying Tinplate trains and scenery projects . Reinhard's standard gauge layout is heavily promoted 1932-39... Reinhard's layout is outside 3rd rail with overhead wires added later .
Reinhard's layout would remain in his basement for 50+ years till it was removed . Only the trains were saved from the layout .. Reinhard's PRR Class O electric built in 1937 and featured in Model Builder in1938 is one of the surviving links to the layout that inspired countless home railroad tycoons.

Cool Dennis; is that also powered by a #10 ?

Mark in Oregon

Mark it has an American Flyer std motor in it.  The trucks are also AF.  It's all wood construction with sheet metal strips making up all the sides and window posts.  Crude does not begin to describe this train really, but on the other hand you couldn't really improve any of that without destroying the "it" factor of the train in the first place.IMG_1880IMG_1884IMG_1886
