I'll be setting up for the first time a K-Line Santa-Fe "Silver Chief" set for Christmas. A set I purchased years ago on clearance. I've since added the extra 2-pac passengers car set  and enough track for a double eight layout.  Was there ever a real Silver Chief run by Santa-Fe? The K-Line cars are distinctive with a gold stripe that runs from the locomotives into the passenger cars. Was that color scheme ever used on an active train?

Was this a quality set? Does it have any collectible value.

Thanks for any insight.

Enjoy the set. I think K-Line did a great job on its O27 Alcos that Lionel had cheapened so badly from the late '60s onto the present (although it appears Lionel made a nice recovery with the LionChief Plus and green FA AAs last year or two). Looks like a great starter set begging to be run and run. Collectible? Not so sure. My guess is that the powered A unit could have two motors which might allow you to add length to the passenger train if K-line made add-on cars.

Back in the 1990's K-Line produced several of the 0-27 Alco FA pairs to match Lionel's then current 0-27 passenger cars in newer road names. I think they offered PRR, NYC, Reading, Illinois Central, and a couple of Santa Fe Warbonnets like yours. All were good smooth runners with dual truck mounted motors that would pull the lighter passenger cars easily.

I've seen post war Lionel Red War Bonnets pulling red band passenger cars over the years. Kline didn't kick it off imo; they paid trubute. PC or not your not alone out there

I actually figured the "Silver Chief" question was going to be about a coach's title name being accurate. I find individual coach and engine names more interesting than scheduled route names. I'd rather know the destinations as geographic points.

Santa Fe didn't name coaches, only numbers.  Dorm cars, sleepers, diners and observations did carry names on the Santa Fe.  None had "Chief" on any, though.

The "Silver" prefix was carried by the Burlington (CB&Q) and all California Zephyr cars.  There was no "Chief" in any of those car names.

Rusty

Authentic or not it won't diminish my enthusiasm.

I was curious about the red band I see on many of the Santa-Fe models. Creative licences I guess.

The K-Line "Silver Chief" locomotive does have a dual motor. The main set includes "Cimarron Valley" Combine, "Twlwiwi"Vista Dome and observation car The 2-pac add on cars are "Eagle Nest Valley" and 3091.

Not sure if this should be in a separate post in a different forum.... I'm doing a test setup on the rug with the track I've collected trying to make a double eight layout. Layout will be on a 9x4 table with two revolving Christmas trees within the circles. I'll have Dept56 pieces around it.   The first issue I thought i might have when I added the extra two cars turned out not to be a problem. My concern the front would meet the end at the crossovers. My problem now is the track doesn't quite meet up for the last connection. Picture attached. I'm about 2 1/2 inches short with Super Snap track. I have extra straight but I hesitate to sacrifice. I' wondering if other available 3-track could be rigged?

I bought this set back in the early 2000s when I got into O-Gauge and wasn't ready to commit to TMCC, etc.  I've since replaced the locomotive with a pair of FT AAs with TMCC and added a pair of Lionel passenger cars and a pair of matching MTH passenger cars (partial and full Vista Dome) to make pretty long train. Might add a B unit at some point.  As some pointed out above, I don't think this was ever a real train because real Santa Fe passenger cars didn't have red stripes, but this set gets plenty of compliments from our guests.  Heck, they just see Santa Fe and go gaga without recognizing this set isn't quite the prized PostWar or Modern F3s that are a whole lot more expensive.
