WBB 4-6-0 modifications

To me, the modification this loco needs most is a smaller tender.

Pete nailed it.  Can't the train manufacturers come up with something like the old Garanimals for kids clothes so engines and tenders aren't mismatched? This is a great engine, but I'd love to have a better matched tender with mine.

You could go with just a few mods, or even further than I went.  Like the tender?  It's simply the old one, made less long and less tall.  Matches the loco much better.  Go for it!

This engine is a work of art. What a beautiful engine!

My big thing is not the tender, actually. it is the lead truck. The second axle of the lead truck tends to rub on the crossheads going around my 0-31 curves (it is an 0-27 rated engine). The crossheads rubbing on the wheels have a tendency to lift the lead truck up off the rails. I've contacted my local repair guy about this. I'd like to swap the 4 wheel lead truck out for a 2 wheel lead truck. I tried cutting the second axle on the lead truck off by that didn't work, requiring me to replace the lead truck. The lead truck is riveted on the engines.

I like to think this conversion of the 4-6-0 into a 2-6-0 is possible.........

I had a similar problem after installing new cylinders/crosshead guides.  I slightly narrowed the rear pilot wheels with a dremel tool, and now it goes around O54 without trouble.    I'd think you could do the same, and with the original equipment it should work just fine on O27.
