Things seem to happen when folks wear train hats.

I'm in the gym trying to do something when an older fellow walks by with a Conrail hat.

"Are you a train man?" I asked?

"I was an engineer for the New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail and Metro North for 50 years," he said.

"Retired in 1998."

"I was the engineer on the 'Old Put' steamers that used to run right through here. Ever heard of it?"

Huge smile . . . . The 'Old Put' ran about 1/4 mile from my house.

I ran over to the desk and wrote out my name and telephone number.

I cannot wait for this phone call !!!!

He'll be the guest of honor when the New York Central runs on the Munoz Lines.

I might even give him the throttle.

After all, he is a 'real" engineer.

Scrappy

The CFO picked up a package of NS employee items from the employee who was a Forum member. Among the goodies was this really nice 'official' NS cap. We've embellished it with some artifacts and if anyone makes fun of me when I'm wearing this I'll shove them onto the tracks!

There's a great little deli and bakery named Carmen's in Hazleton, PA. Last summer they invited customers to submit ideas and names for new menu items. I suggested a BLACK DIAMOND sandwich, named after the legendary Lehigh Valley train. Carmen's liked it. I donned my Iron Horse Rambles souvenir cap for a photo. The Reading Lines diamond is original. I added the others. My mother spliced a band from another souvenir cap so I could keep wearing it. I also wore it on May 25th when I rode one of those great excursions with 765 and two NS Heritage Units around Horseshoe Curve.

I will never understand why the makers of such pins cannot move the pin up a bit so gravity will keep them right side up. Such a simple solution that it boggles the mind they do not do it.

Except for National holidays when I will wear trainware as a show of historical patriotism,  around these parts (just across 'the River' from you) wearing train ware is a great way to be dismissed at the local home improvement center. If I'm looking for prompt & effective attention at Loews or Tractor Supply I will put on Western garb. A Stetson at the local Walmart however might invite a search for citizenship papers. Of course it is well known that trainwear  at train show/meets will probably invite a 25% increase in asking prices. I find these costume-social/commercial dynamics here in the Northeast frankly amusing and I'm usually quite willing to exploit this sort of regional type casting folly.

That is actually a sign of distress...lamenting one of the great fallen flags.

In my 1/48th scale world that flag has yet to fall.

"Mergers? We don't need no stinkin' mergers!"

Don't have any photos Mike but around here we regularly see (real) freight cars with the proud SOUTHERN lettering blazened across them in (faded) white!
