Alan,

To put Atlas trucks on the Weaver hopper, you would have to modify the bolster on the car or modify the Atlas trucks. This particular Weaver car uses a more prototypical bolster than Atlas cars. Atlas uses a built up bolster on their trucks instead of on their cars. Atlas trucks would make the Weaver car sit way too high.

"I'm trying to change out the Lionel type trucks with Atlas 100 ton roller bearing trucks & Protocraft couplers. Will these conversions work & what things do I have to do to make them work as I'm an armature."

Weaver trucks can use either 3 rail or 2 rail wheels so you only need to replace the wheels. Once you put the correct wheels on there it should sit about the right height for scale couplers. Weaver has the coupler pad there since they sell 2 rail cars too.If you still want to use Atlas trucks instead of swapping the Weaver wheels you'll need to build new body bolsters to make the car sit at correct height as Atlas uses a less prototypical bolster design. Here's a Weaver hopper with scale wheels in the original trucks and Kadee couplers installed.....DaveB

"Unfortunate.  A little thought there would have been a good investment"

Yeah, seems that Atlas likes to **** people off with screwball engineering, placing sow's ear details on silk purse models. They started off bringing  such high hopes to the scale modeling community with that great running SW8-9 then went off the road with their subsequent china drive offerings. The trucks/bolster and almost but not quite couplers are just further  instances of their forcing one to jump thru small annoying hoops to use their stuff....DaveB

The 4750 is noticeably longer than the 4740.

Andrew,

Yes you are 100% right on about the Weaver 4740 & Atlas 4750 cvd hoppers. The Weaver model also has 16 vertical ribs vs the atlas 4750 which has 18 ribs. Both nice models.

Now THAT is funny!

Bob2,

Is that what I posted? Ha Ha! I meant amature, which you knew but thanks for emphasizing & making me laugh too.

Officially an O scaler-well finances will decide there & if my wife reneges on her promise to let me have the basement to myself that is. She said the basement was mine now she's coming up with new ideas. Time to get the trains running 1st what think fellas?

I think I can even do without the shelf couplers if worse comes to worse. Boy I love the size of O scale. Now if I can learn how to wire up Lou Cross turnouts that'll cut back the financial woes a great lot. No offense to 3rail,but it's 2rail in O or nothing. Been in HO orver 30 years where there is no 3 rail so to go to 3rail would be something I couldn't do.

After you install a few pairs of those bullet proof O scale Kadees you'll forget all about needing more couplers and can concentrate on playing with the trains....DaveB

Indeed.  Rather than obsessing over something that may never come to pass or will someday happen, getting started with what's readily available and having a bit of fun is more productive.

As for finances, there's lots of stuff available at very good prices to let you set some stuff up, test ideas, test track arrangements, and generally do a little hands-on learning.

Good luck on the basement - I had 100% of the available space at T=0 and now have 75%.  Plenty for my real needs, but some things are moving targets.
