Terrific job, Todd!! That's an idea that would really attract kids!

The birds, pigs, and slingshot [minus the elastic and craft foam] were from a cake decorating set I found on eBay.

The wood members are cut and stained pieces of basswood.  The boulders are cut pieces of square dowel, that I covered with spackle, and then colored with an ink/alcohol mix.  The glass blocks are blue tinted glass mosaic tiles from Michaels that are used in those do-it-yourself stepping stone kits.  I initially tried using cut pieces of blue foam [like we use on our layouts] for the "glass", but never could get the right  glossy sheen on them.  I tried spraying them with multiple coats of high gloss clear coat, and tried dozens of dunking in Future floor acrylic... but, couldn't get a satisfactory glossy look.  In hindsight, using glass to represent glass should have been a no- brainer. LOL

The TNT crates are made from thin basswood sheets and strips.  I used a dental pick to scribe the joint lines in the basswood sheet pieces, glued them into a box, and then glued basswood strips over the ends of the box to represent the framing.  The "TNT" labels were cropped out of an Angry Birds screen capture, printed, and glued onto the ends.

The biggest challenge I had on this was getting the graphics on the work caboose done.  I initially wanted to use custom printed decals, but had a horrible time trying to cut them to fit around the ladders, windows, and grab irons.  I also had major issues getting the print-your-own decal paper to stick to the cab.  Ultimately, I ended up hand painting all of the graphic scenery using craft acrylic paint.

Yes, you are right, WS. In my li'l 'burg, you can't quite tell what time of day it is (a visitor asked that on one occasion,) what season it is (she asked that question, too,) what year it is, or even what decade (!) it is. (I'm incorrigible.)

In fact, everybody's car or truck, no matter what the circa, is in tip-top shape - looking like-new (almost right-out-of-the-box, you might say)   ; everybody keeps 'em clean, too. Yet, a discerning eye can begin to pick out that some new folks have moved into town, and they all seem to have very aged and rusty transportation (esp. the pickup trucks, for some reason  ) as well as some rundown properties.

Alas, it looks like the mayor has encouraged all citizens to have fun and run amuck with rampant individuality and disregard for reality. In fact, as one "netizen" pointed out some time ago, from a neighboring community, top-drawer, one-of-a-kind racing cars were seen displayed at a local street fair, along w/farmers selling such wonders as watermelon-sized cucumbers, as sidedishes, no doubt, for the hamburgers (Street Fair pictures are below,) available at a close-by vending truck. It's a wild place, Moon Township. Yup. You never can tell what assault on the senses will occur next, with all the non-prototypical self-indulgence going on, thanks to a former pseudo-Hippie messin' w/ everybod's head. What can I tell you, except to say it sure is nice having you take a look at the community and saying you like what you've seen.

Oh, and P.S. A few fancy-schmancy diesels have been seen zipping through town recently, too, and nobody here has any idea what circa they are (!) However, they're dependable as heck and sure-footed, and the kids like the colors zipping by.

I laugh at myself, so your kidding around (and your point is a true one) is most welcome . And I am having a good time of it all, as long as folks still like to visit Moon Township, one way or another, every once in a while.

"Is this a Lionel or a Williams?  I have a Williams like this but in a different number"

This is Lionel, but it is a hybrid. The blue die-cast frame, motor, and trucks are from a 1950's locomotive, probably a C&O 624.  The 8556 Chessie Shell is MPC, 1975-76.  I did not put the engine together, but bought it this way at a train show back in the 1980's.

I've added an electronic reversing unit, but no sound as yet.

Thankyou for the compliment.Yes it is Rick, I'm trying to keep a reasonable amount of detail in it with a few "fun" operating items added for the kids, myself included.I've got a long way to go, this section is the only spot "photo-worthy" and it could still use a ton more detail.

I really like the look of the trees, in the foreground, against those cool looking "steep", pointy mountains. Different, in the best kind of way.

Actually, I like everything about those scenes... everything, including the colors, works and compliments each other. One of the more unique looking layouts.

My new little die-cast early diesel-electric box cab would look so cool, rolling through there.

Hi RickO, I was wondering if it was your layout also. I must say very nice, beautiful scenery and detail. I would like to see more photo's of the rest of the layout even though it's a work in progress.

hello David Minarik.........

I noticed that you have a pair of Sunset 3rd 2-10-4 Texas types and how was the quiet drive gearbox holding up in terms of wear and tear ?   I asked because i am picking up my S.F. # 5011 class Texas type in Nov and i think this one will also have the quiet drive gearbox too.
