Wait there is more: Lunch at Carters Hamburger. We talked about trains and German Tomato Soup. My waitress gave me some great tips for locations for finding trains, and she comes in every day to make the homemade soup. Today it was German Tomato Soup, she just ran out and she was making more. I will have to come back. They are open 24 hours 365 days a year, even on Christmas Day.

In our home, no trains are around our Christmas tree on the main floor, nor on the floor anywhere.IMG_8706v However, Christmas decorations get applied onto IMG_1481IMG_1486IMG_1490IMG_8620_edited-4IMG_8675photo [2)bthe layout, for the Seasonal celebration...

Here is the only place on the First Floor where "trains" are featured among the decorations...photo 2_edited-2

FrankM, having a good ol' time of it all.

Gary: Have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Gary, is that the Carters at Southfield and Outer Drive? OMG, I used to stop there for an occasional late night snack, also frequented the one in Lincoln Park and the one at the end of Southfield at the Detroit river. I had no idea any were still open. Thanks for memory jolt.

Steve

Patrick......I absolutely LOVE this picture......

One of my earliest Christmas memories (late 50s) is going with my Dad and uncles to a small New Haven freight yard in the central Bronx, along East Tremont Avenue, north of Parkchester.......where the Bronx DMV eventually stood years later.....

We bought our trees right off the box cars. I can remember the cold winter nights, with Christmas lights strung up along 2x4s set up around the box car, with a roaring fire in a 55 gallon drum.

Hi Steve: Yes - Outer Drive & Southfield (M39) The ladies were very helpful, and they know all the key places to find trains to avoid the RR Police and Border Patrol. The Carters at the end of Southfield at the Detroit River was sold. There is a restaurant at that location, but the old fashion Carters Hamburger structure was torn down.

Great picture! Really tells a story.

Peter:

Loved your reminisce. Though I don't have such memories, through the magic of typed words, I was there with you! Thanks for taking me along!

Excellent then/now pics!!

I think I had one of those way back when. Is that a battery powered "bump n' run" engine? That is, it would run across a smooth (non-carpet/rug) floor until it bumped into something, then the power assembly would continue running, swiveling under the engine as it did, and take off in another direction?

A really fun thing about model trains (especially toy and/or 3-rail) is that we still get to be a kid!

Merry Christmas everybody!

Andre

Hello Christopher, the picture below reminds me of five days that my wife and I spent in Pennsylvania visiting a high school classmate of my wife and his wife in October. He has been associated with the Penn State Medical School in Hershey for about 40 years. They live in Hummelstown.

NS Dash-9 9672 leads Jersey bound 18N through Hummelstown, PA on the Harrisburg Line.
