Watching the trains go by. Let's see your tinplate!

when I inherited my Uncle Jim's trains, there several things I never knew he had, including these Marx passenger cars. Odd thing was there was a lone Observation. I've looked for an extra car, but they seem pretty proud of them when I did see one. I was at one of our local antique malls last week and spotted this one. It looks like the $5 car it is. Joy Line couplers and open windows, looks fine to me.

Zero the nothing that is....rather interesting
American Flyer Set #0 from 1922
The catalog illustration (set in upper left corner)
...and the box contents
These components along with the track were part of a boxed set. What makes it interesting is that the catalog illustration and the catalog description of the locomotive do not match. The illustrated engine in the catalog is the more stripped down version with no connecting rods and no brake whereas the catalog text indicates the engine does have connecting rods and a brake - which is exactly the case with this engine.

In England there were no cabooses, they did however have brake-vans running at the end of a goods train. Here is an 0 gauge lithographed tinplate Bassett-Lowke brake van made in the fifties. Note the "extended vision" windows which are just lithographed flat:
In the same period Chad Valley made this very toy-like small 0 gauge brake-van, which even did not have buffers:

First time I ran the 392 this year. Well, for two years actually. I thought it was a poor runner. He does have a little hitch in his giddy up, but is running ok really. The tender came with 200 size wheels. You can see it on the towel. That’s no bueno so I have to change the wheels out. Right now I have to run it with the 385 tender. I do have another 392 motor I plan on switching out some day. It’s not perfect, but it is a handsome engine I’d say.

Greetings Friends
What a pleasant surprise I had at the Ft Myers toy train show last weekend. You may recall my previous post showing the Lionel 238E with a six coupled 224E mechanism but no tender. Would it be possible to find the 265W tender in a small show like Ft Myers? (Last year my only purchase was a Dorfan boxcar.)
Within the first 5 minutes I bought an American Flyer 1112 Automobile Car, but then things quieted down. About an hour later I was desperately searching through boxes under the tables and I was amazed to find a 265W tender with a loose shell. It turned out to be in very good shape, although I'm sure it was repainted. In the process all the hardware was missing! Can anyone help me with the ladder, handrails, and Lionel nameboards?

As I collect trains I try to put the equipment together into sets as they would have been found in the catalogs. I usually pick up a car or two at a time, and once in a while I have been able to acquire an entire set that has spent its whole life together since leaving the factory. I also enjoy doing research on the equipment that I have collected. I am able to focus my collecting energies and resources rather than buying every piece of equipment that comes along. Recently I have been doing reading about Ives trains on the Ives Train Society Website and I came across a number of uncatalogued sets that were produced. In particular there are a group of sets called the Syndicate Trading Specials. Let me quote from their website:
"We don't know which Syndicate it was and we don't know what they were trading, but we do know that IVES sold at least six distinct sets that were labeled "Syndicate Trading Special" or "Syndicate Special"....... The sets usually contain intricate layouts and at least both the mechanical sets that we've been able to verify contained a small station and other small track accessories."
This is a photo and a description from the Ives Train Society Website:
Syndicate Trading Special No. 3
Engine not cataloged in Orange in 1930, passenger cars have 1929-30 solid frames. Picture of box below looks like Wide gauge box - this came with lots of track, station, switches and misc. Accessories - we've never seen one that still had original set intact in original box, to give exact contents.
This information guided me in putting together a representation of this set.
All of the cars have the 1929 - 1930 solid frames.
I was able to put this set together in just two purchases. Some of the sets that I have from American Flyer took quite a few more than that.
Have a Great Tinplate Weekend

Jeff Kane shows the ladder, give him a shout
Some MARKLIN passenger cars in Gauge One from a hundred years ago. Those cars where well detailed and all hand painted and there where also inside little peoples witch unfortunately are now missing. The onside of the post office van was just fresh from the attic, sorry for that old dust but it has help to preserve those car in very good condition.
Now i have to find the correct matching engine for the set.....
Have a nice tinplate weekend, Daniel

You could get straight Nickel handrail for Jeff Kane as well and just bend them to your needs to fit the tender. Name plates may be harder to find in decent condition.
Early Hafner with a fairly uncommon sheet metal locomotive. The only non cast engine they made in this era.

This is a Marx 2-8-0 windup project that I recently completed. It is based on an electric 994 shell and is powered by a custom windup motor using Marx 17 spoke drivers and Marx ratchet motor internal parts. There is also a Marx riser gear motor in the tender for extra power:

Dammit, you guys are hoarding all of the milk cars, lol...

Briansilvermustang - can you give us some idea of the size of that engine/tender and a guess as to what it is made of? The wheels also don't appear to have flanges - true? Also is that the finish or is that a lot of corrosion along with some remaining paint?
We don’t have to much tinplate however our youngest son Mason (age 9) has a modern baby blue comet set and this 1668e and set.
This set was donated to the Lionel Collectors Club UK to raise club funds. Mason purchased at our annual club show a couple of years ago.
Intrestingly this is a U.K. supplied set.
Obvously not using this transformer but it’s nice to see Lionel UK specification.
Finally got round to fixing up the engine which was missing its marker lights, light bulb and had worn pick ups.
Good clean and new springs and brushes.
New repo marker lamps.
Shout out and thanks to Olsen’s for shipping the parts to the U.K.
I’d be intrested to know more about this set.
It’s my understanding that Lionel had a Office in London before WW 2 has anybody come across any information about this?
Have a great weekend
Nick & Mason

Now have a few more Marklin and other cars coming my way, The Shell tank is a 17740 and the gondola in the upper right seems to be a 17720 log car missing its logs and a few posts. The tank is missing its drain valve. Not sure yet what the other cars are. The same guy had some other auctions that included a few Merkur cars but I did not get those.

picked up a few things this week. Some Ferguson accessories:
and this train tower made by New York Trains in 1983. It looks like a No. 7 Marx tower but with a sturdier girder structure and it has interior lighting and red and green LEDs
I also negotiated with the eBay seller getting rid of the Hoge 1000 pieces. Picked up the tender and one passenger car. Now to make a few black vestibules. Hoping these will look good behind a spare 750 loco I have.
