Hard at work at the old Ives station! 🚂 Lets see your tinplate!
Replies sorted oldest to newest
Nothing new this week so I will present an old favorite, a french JEP set from 1932 with the litho version of the 2B2 loco of the Paris-Orleans ligne. High voltage model, so take care...
Have a nice tinplate weekend, Daniel

Last Saturday I found this LMS (London, Midland and Scottish Railway) fish van made by BING for the British market, presumably also for sale via Bassett Lowke:
Since fish had to be delivered fast to the market fish vans were often added to passenger trains, so that is what I did here with a complet Bing LMS train:

Here is a video I took Tuesday night from the Roanoke Valley Model Railroad Club, located in the basement of the VMT. My Multigauge layout is still under construction but we are making progress.

Have you posted any pics / video of your dual-gauge layout?
I'm trying to do mixed-gauge tinplate, and am always looking for ideas.

That is the current dual gauge layout I am building as a member of the club. The outside bottom is O-72/Standard. The inside bottom is Gargraves Standard 58 I think. The middle figure 8 is Standard 42. The top is O-42/Standard

DEAN: Very clever additions to a CLASSIC AF accessory! ☺
I've been away from the forum for the past two weeks chasing real trains (including the Trains magazine 50th anniversary run on the Cumbres and Toltec in New Mexico). In my absence the Ives Lehigh Valley boxcar arrived which means another addition to the collection of Ives 6 1/2 inch herald boxcars. Here's the last 5 posed in order of acquisition - left to right top to bottom.

those Ives cars are great
DANIEL: Interesting set, but WHAT were they thinking offering a high voltage set? 😐 I realize Marklin, and maybe some others, also offered these dangerous sets. Wonder if there were any fatalities caused by such inane products? 🤔

Art, electricity was not standardized in those times, you may have 220volts, 110v and dc or ac so high voltage trains accept all kinds of curent. Transformers with reduced 20v where not as comon as today and very expensives.
I have no idea if casual fatalities where comons but this system has been prohibited before the second world war so who knows....
An observation, all my high voltage sets in the collection are generally in very good condition so maybe less played with by young children after an electric shock experience.
However if you take care of the use there is no problem in running high voltage trains, just do it alone and no pets around.

DANIEL: THANKS for the info regarding these sets! ☺
Here are three of the larger 9" Ives cars I received this week. These are the more rare ones.
I won several others at auction too that are duplicates of others I have with some variations in roof color, frame and journals. I'm still missing the St Louis Frisco road name. I've lost 3 auctions this year on that car!

George, really nice cars, i hope you will find the missing one, a part of train collecting pleasure is the hunt of the rarest pieces. Daniel

Thank you Daniel!
I made a few strategic errors on those three auctions. It is possible that the third auction was for the same car as the second. It was for a mint condition car, and both were mint. What are the odds? If so, the buyer of the car in the second auction made about $300! Buy high, sell higher!

George you're doing better than I am on those Ives cars. I've bid on several, but they quickly get out of my willingness to pay.
Daniel, that set is fantastic! High voltage is at least better than some of the really old train sets were you poured acid to make your own batteries.

Hi Terry,
They were on eBay. I bought a few back in May from seller Moose409. Here is an item number for a recent listing. 192626735704
He doesn't have any listed right now. He may be on vacation or something. Try sending him an email through eBay.
I also found this site with hi res images to roll your own. I printed a replacement sign on photo paper for mine. There are some poor quality repro stickers out there, and my billboard came with one.

Dave, you have to dig deep for these. I resigned myself to that. I think rarity drives the price on them. These are in the C-5 / C-6 neighborhood and are still quite pricey. A C-7 / C-8 Frisco car sold for over $750. The more common Merchants Despatch and Union Line cars can be had for much less.

Terry, I got the magnetic inserts from the same guy on Ebay as George did...Moose409. I paid 7.99 per insert. He was out of them for a while then he got some more back in so hopefully he will be listing some more soon. He listed the Sunoco one as "MAGNETIC AMERICAN FLYER LIONEL WHISTLE BILLBOARD VINTAGE SUNOCO ADVERTISING". They fit pretty good and the colors and graphics are nice.
Tinplate Art, I always liked the Clown billboard, but didn't see the need to purchase another one just for that. I thought this was a resonable way to get the most out of an accessory. I do the same with the lionel steam and diesel rail sounds boxcars. I have one of each and just change the boxcar shells to match what engine I am running. Guess I am just cheap, uh frugal.

Lionel standard gauge "Baby State" set- 318E locomotive and three cars in "State Brown" color scheme. A recent arrival- original condition needing some cleaning and re-attachment of the window "glass" inside the passenger cars, and new wheels on the engine. The original Lionel wheels were actually intact and un-cracked, but the non-gear wheels had swollen outwards (the tire/flange moving out from the hub) such that the gauge widened out preventing running on curves.

That first one is very neat- a large scale amusement park train of some kind. I recall seeing it on Ebay or another auction site a few years ago. Here are the other photos that accompanied the listing:
