Hi guys, I missed the bus on this for sure but can someone tell me which of the CZ cars have been delivered thus far, or where I can find a listing containing this info? I have looked on Atlas' website but I haven't seen anything other than what is listed for pre-orders and such. Thanks in advance I appreciate the help.

It goes without saying the train grew in size of its consist depending on demand and number of transcontinental sleepers and or charters. After 1967 the train lost its provenance... CB&Q and D&RGW continued operations as California Service. The Rio Grande Zephyr continued on after 1971 through 1983 only between Denver and Salt Lake City, never on Wednesday however.

Chris, hope you don't mind me asking another CZ question.
Has Atlas released a 10/6 with the name "Silver Rapids"? It was built by the Budd Company in 1948 for the Pennsylvania RR as a California Zephyr transcontinental sleeping car. The CZ terminated in Chicago and the PRR would use this car (or whichever CZ car was available) for passengers between NY and Chicago. If Atlas did make one, I'll start looking for it.
Thanks

I'm pretty sure that "special PRR" car has come, and is long gone. Obviously most were purchased by east coast folks.
HT,
Thanks. Just been searching the internet and I found one 2-rail version, but no 3-rail. My buy list was down to just a few items, now I have something else to look for.
Did someone mention on here earlier that one of the last cars built would require a change to the tooling and then Atlas could not go back and re-run some of the earlier cars?
No you didn't the 6-5 sleepers are still available....Western Depot Hobbies has them. I was able to purchase a diner from them just last month...

Atlas did do the Pennsylvania 10-6 sleeper "Silver Rapids"

That would be the conductors dome car. Granted this may not be true, a tooling insert could be used, and/or there maybe more than one cavity for this car.
BTW Erik-
Thanks for posting the above consist of cars... I just realized I will need to be a buying 2 more 16 section sleepers...

This is how "Silver Rapids" (named after the 10/6 PRR's series of cars) looked after it was withdrawn from CZ service in the 1960's. While in CZ service the roof was NOT black.
Silver Rapids original appearance.

Slightly related questions................
1. Are these cars specialized or unique to the Zephyr?
2. Could the tools/dies for these cars be used to produce cars for other roads or would that require require extensive and cost prohibitive modification of the tools?
thanks

The Dome portion of the cars are the "standard Budd Dome" used on several other trains of the time 1956 CB&Q DZ, GN, NP, Wabash, CP Canadian, etc for example.
The cars are similar in appearance to the CP/VIA Canadian, Twin Cities Zephyr fleet. Window arrangements and position of the dome on some of the cars were different. Otherwise NO these cars were exclusive to the CZ and no other.
1956 Denver Zephyr
Wabash Blue Bird (similar to the TZ obs these cars have a longer observation lounge)
1955 Great Northern Empire Builder
Northern Pacific North Coast Limited
CB&Q Twin Cities Zephyr (Note the lack of the risen rear dome lounge on the Wabash Blue Bird & TZ obs)
VIA, CP Canadian
As you can plainly see the Budd "Standard Dome" was utilized on many trains however the cars window arrangements and styling are very different. The Canadian is the CZ's northern cousin however a very different consist and construction methodology. An obvious give away is the lack of the CZ's full length skirting.
Kansas City Zephyr used a tail car very similar to the DZ.

Atlas has done both versions of the PRR Silver Rapids that are shown above. The CZ version was in the very first run of 10-6 sleepers. It is very hard to find.
I have 3 if someone would want to make an offer.
I have the black roof one if anybody is interested
Eric, I suppose your silver roof versions are 2 rail
Great thread guys! I didn't even know there was another dome car coming after the baggage & diner dome.
Thanks for all the info, and especially the pics, Erik. I love those Rio Grande PA's you are always posting. I would buy them but they would never stay on my 54" radii!
I am looking for the 3-rail version of the Silver Rapids as run on the CZ from 1948 to 1957. When PRR transcontinental service ended in 1957, the car went into regular service and received the black roof (plus other changes).
I've posted this link in prior CZ threads... but for new folks who may not be as familiar, it's a terrific website that contains all kinds of great CZ info, including rosters of trains as they existed throughout the CZ's history.

Caboose Hobbies is still taking orders for Atlas CZ 10-6 cars including Silver Rapids. I ordered 3 cars in mid-May. Today, I called them to check the status of this order, and they said they are still waiting for the cars to be delivered from Atlas. I trust these people to know their business, but have no prior experience with them.
What do you think?
For the Burlington section of travel, would you use the Lionel E6, F3, or E8

That is great news.
Wonder now if in the future they will produce a complete train all at once.

First, it would depend on what era you are trying to duplicate, i.e. the fist 8 or 9 months of the newly operated CZ would have the aluminum painted A-B-A F3 passenger units.
Second, the CB&Q didn't have any E6 units, and no manufacturer has produced CORRECT CB&Q E5A/E5B units in 3-Rail scale as yet. Thus your choices would be E7A units from Williams or Sunset/3rd Rail/Golden Gate Depot, or E8A and/or E9A units recently announced by Sunset/3rd Rail. Remember that the CB&Q did not have any E7B, nor any E8B, nor any E9B units on their roster.

Should have checked right after you posted; no more 10-6 cars on their web site
Thank you Hot water. The F3s have the job as I bought them waiting for Lionel's CZ cars which I canceled after I saw them. That was the straw that broke the back of scale modeling with me. I need the first 2 cars (dome & 10-6 Sleeper) that came out and the last two. Since I am in the east I purchased the PRR Silver Rapids. I have the last 2 on order with my LHS. I also have a few undecorated for a special project. The CZ and the 20th Century (Heavyweight)are for static display purposes as I converted my scale layout to a Super O post war layout(my first love)

Actually, what I should have said is, Caboose Hobbies of Denver WAS taking orders for 10-6's as of May 12, 2015. But May 12th is well after the original delivery date of those cars.
You mean ever . . . perhaps once? Well, maybe . . . although I seriously doubt it. For that to have happened, something catastrophic would have had to have happened to the CZ's F-units. By the time the single stripe came to be painted on the four D&RGW PA1's (beginning in 1961) they had been standard power for the Yampa Valley train to Craig, and for the Royal Gorge. And the two PB1's had been converted in 1965 to unpowered boiler cars. The California Zephyr had been powered by EMD F-units since the Truman administration.
The boiler cars were used, m-ued into EMD F-unit consists, on the Zephyr, but that is not the same, and you did ask about the PA1's. The CZ required at least 3 Alco-GE's or 4 EMD's, ignored to make its schedule.
The Grande learned very quickly to despise the PA.. Requiring a GE technician on every CZ powered with the pretty Alco's. :/
thanks for the great info!
No. Only single PA was painted in that scheme (6001) after the PAs had been removed from CZ service.
