Bought a 4-6-0 New Haven steam engine from Scale Craft. It is for my multi-scale collection. I now have engines in G-0-S-OO-H0-TT-N, and Z.

Anybody know about Scale Craft and their products?

Scale Craft 4-6-0

My intention is to repaint and reletter and renumber this in NYC. Unless I hear strong objection from informed members here. I do not think this engine is very valuable.

That looks like their standard OO guage 4-6-0 with die cast bioler and tender.  Some were 3 rail, some were 2 rail.  Look on the blog American OO on the web to learn more about ScaleCraft OO scale.  They were available from 1938-1941 and 1945-1951 then from Kemtron till about 1956.

They were mostly known for their O Scale line which included a Penn K-4, NYC Hudson, SP Pacific, SP Mountain and Santa Fe Mikado.  More in the January/February issue of O Scale Resource on the web.

Hi Mike - Scale-Craft, based in Chicago, was owned by Frank Donnelly (his family's company did the Yellow Pages under the name Ruben Donnelly).
SC began making "00" trains in '37 - a year ahead of Lionel - & made a much wider range of engines, freight & pass. cars (their pass. cars were 11 & 13" long & look great with Lionel's "00" Hudsons!) than any other mfr. of "OO" trains They continued to offer "00" till at least '50 (that's the newest catalog I have). Their biggest "00" loco was a die cast C&NW Class "H" 4-8-4 engine with a matching 12-wheel tender. I believe all their "O" & "OO" trains were sold in kit form set up for 2 - rail DC power.
On p. 41 of their '37 catalog is a shot of your 4-6-0 engine in "00"; it's their first "00" locomotive. If you want to see the pages in the '41 catalog showing your loco, I can scan them to you; give me your e-mail address. Mine is: dkuehnem@stny.rr.com Hope this helps.

sure: thanks - gg1hokk@ptd.net

Dick,

It was Elliot Donnelly who purchased American Model Engineers/Scale-Craft from Charles Smith in late 1936.  Up till that time Scale-Craft was O Scale (only).  Donnelly was a OO modeler who funded the OO line which appeared in 1937.  That line though introduced as 2 rail was soon also available 3 rail to be compatible with Lionel's models which were introduced a year later. In a well known law suit, Donnelly sued Lionel for patent infringement as Lionel copied the Scale-Craft's patented trucks for their nearly identical freight cars.  Lionel paid Scale-craft a royalty till their end of OO production (1941).  Scale-Craft's line was available after WW2 for about 5 years and was later sold to Kemtron but OO essentially died as a commercial scale. As late as 1970 Kemtron had cases of OO products left in its warehouse.  I think these were ultimately disposed of.
