What Can You Tell Me About This?

According to Greenberg, the CP No. 494/451 locomotive and tender appear in the Marx Marlines catalog, circa 1940 - 1942, for $2.50. The other cars are in the Woolworth, Grant, and Murphy catalogs 1938 - 1940.

553 Tank Car - 15 cents

554 Coal Car - 15 cents

555 Box Car - 15 cents

556 Caboose - 15 cents

So, that's a whopping $3.10 ?!  I am rich!!!!!

Walt Hiteshaw's guide is the best resource for 6" Marx cars.  He sells the CD at his website:

It shows the tender as being in production from 1939-42, which should give a good range of the date of your set.

I'm assuming the train and cars are all that you have?  No box or accessories?  I've looked through my catalog scans from those years, but don't find anything that exactly matches what you have.  Yes, it's possible that it is a set with an extra car, but it is also possible that it was one of the bigger Marx sets from that era that is missing some cars, too.  Either way, the six inch cars with automatic one-way couplers are less common than other Marx six inch cars, and yes, the loco in that color scheme is less common as well.  Nice set to have...

Your set has the 8 wheel, 6" cars with one way autocouplers. This would have been a deluxe set for it's time. The time frame is 1937-41. Set numbers would most likely have been in 15xxx range. Make up of cars could vary. These sets usually had switches and auto uncouplers.

Thank you all for your valuable information!  The set is not really my area of interest but I like the simplicity of it.  Not sure if I am going to sell it or clean it up and keep it.
