Latest wrinkle in the ongoing QSI / Proto1 fiasco.....Last night the dog got into my train room, and thanks to my being distracted...was able to Wolf down my QS2+ upper board chip !   Getting it back is out of the question, even if it survives.  I can get a replacement from MTH for about $38 shipped, and be back in business...but this begs the question...will the Pooch  be erupting in cab chatter, smoke, and working marker lights anytime soon?

You can figure a carnivorous critter is going to grab a pork chop off a plate on the

table, but I never can understand dogs grabbing stuff that isn't, and doesn't smell

like, meat.  They seem to leave apples and oranges alone on the table, after a couple

of sniffs.  They say hogs are smarter than dogs...I wonder if a pet potbellied pig

would have eaten that?

You may be able to get a correct replacement chip. Also, either chip may have to be initialized when it's mounted on the board - I don't remember exactly which QSI chips are plug and play and which require initialization (which has to be done with a special apparatus). The Scaled Tin Rail used to have a good stock of QS2+ chips but I don't know what the new owners are doing with the business. According to the Hiller Enterprises web site, they have acquired The Scaled Tin Rail and moved it to Longmont, Colorado. Try calling Bob Hiller at 303-678-7840.

I have another QS2+ chip around here now, and I did give it a shot today.  Got all the sounds you'd expect.   Not sure about all the features yet.  Sadly this chip is an electric locomotive, and won't be correct for the trusty, crusty FM Train Monster.

Glad to hear that STR will be picked up. I still have needs for a number of QSI top and intermediate (battery) boards.   I like the old classic QSI sound for 12 banger FM engines better than all the other stuff out there right now.  The base boards for all these applications go back to Custom Trains, circa 1992-'93.

Well, I'll BE !!   After a procedure which I won't detail....I was able to retrieve the QSI chip !   It was apparently in one piece, so I took the liberty of thoroughly washing it off with warm, soapy water...and a good rinse.   Then, just for S&G, I reinstalled the chip back into the top board of the big FM.  Turned on the Z4K, and fizzle, a forward jerk, and game over !    Wonder pooch appears no worse for wear, but the Train Monster now runs like POOP !
