Not following any era.  I just buy what appeals to me.
Lionel Pennsylvania T1...it is a beauty.
Lionel Cab-Forward...unique and just plain cool looking.
K-Line C&O Mikado...real work horse and a great runner.
Several docksiders...I like small steam.
K-Line Tank Engine...neat locomotive.
Lionel PM 1225...like Berkshires, Pere Marquette and Polar Express.
K-Line Allegheny...important to the C&O and my favorite large steam.

At one time I thought about getting a 3rd Rail GTW 4-8-4, but finances and a lack of space brought me back to reality. Eventually, I'd like to find one of the MtH Ps3 version of the Empire state Express 4-4-0 with the original 84" drivers.

But 99% of my modeling is trolleys and a little On30 nowadays....

All of my steam locomotives are PRR, all TMCC or Legacy control. Most are Lionel with a few Kline. I am listing them from newest (to me) to oldest:

PRR Y3 2-8-8-2

PRR J1 2-10-4 (TMCC)

PRR E6 Atlantic #460 Legacy

PRR M1a 4-8-2

PRR A4 0-4-0 Kline/Lionel

PRR K4 4-6-2 Postwar Kline

PRR A4 0-4-0 Kline

PRR H9 2-8-0

PRR L2 2-8-2 Kline

Williams PRR 2-8-2 Mikado - this engine got me hooked on scale engines. I have not run it for quite some time but every time I put it on the tracks it runs. No TMCC so its use has decreased over the years but it still gets a mention.

I find that I regularly operate models of steam engines built as late as 1944 (4-8-4) all the way to as early as 1905 (2-8-0).   My late tries to replicate the year 1950, so virtually all 20th Century steam was in use, along with the first generation of diesels.  The one requirement I place on my engines is that they are all Milwaukee Road, with a few C&NW engines in reserve.

So the 2-8-0 pulls short "patrol freights", the 4-8-4's pull both time freights as well as passenger trains, the Mikado also handles main line freights and the streamlined Atlantics and Hudsons do the duty on passenger assignments.  No steam switchers at this time.

Of course, in the electrified territory, the big electrics take over for all steam.

These are the steam locomotives I run regularly.

 L=Lionel  M=MTH   W=Weaver 3rd=3rd Rail  A=Atlas  K=K-line

L-4-8-2 MIb Legacy, L-4-4-2 Legacy, L4-8-4 (3751), M-4-8-8-4  M-4-8-8-2  M-2-8-8-3 RS M-0-4-0, M-0-8-0, M-4-8-4 T1, M-4-8-4 FEF, M-4-8-4 S2, M-0-8-8-0 L1, M-2-10-0 Russian, M-2-10-0, M-4-12-2, M-4-8-8-2, M-2-6-6-4 A Class, M-4-10-2, M-2-8-4, K-4-6-2, K-0-6-0 B6, K-2-8-2, A 0-6-0 USRA, 3rd 2-6-0.

My roster is constrained by the three roads I admire--Frisco, MoPac, T&P--and the fact that I limit my roster to scale (to keep the numbers under control) and Lionel manufacture.  To date, Lionel has produced 5 scatle steamers for these roads:

Frisco 2-8-2

T&P 4-8-2

Frisco 4-6-0

MoPac 2-8-2

T&P 2-8-2

Of the five, I have and run the first three.

Sitting as a display piece on a shelf is MoPac 2-8-4 #1125 which I 'bashed out of an MPC Berk-clone (the SRR 2-8-2).

PaPaT,

The engines in use by the PRR in 1948 that I don’t have are the Q1, T1 prototype, and E6.  I’m not too concerned about having the unique Q1 and early T1s, but I will buy Lionel’s Legacy E6 when it is released in post-WWII colors.  I don’t have the D16sb/d, S1 or S2 because they were retired by 1948, but I may pick these up in the future as “static displays”.

I focus on modern superpower steam, but I have a few older prototypes. The oldest locomotive would be the MTH ESE 4-4-0 (1893)and the newest would be the N&W J's 610,611,612 (1950).I don't have a exact count but I have just over 300 steam locomotives from MTH,Lionel,3rd Rail,Weaver and K-Line all but about about a dozen(Lionel prewar and postwar)are modern era 1996 or newer.I run DCS,Legacy and conventional.I returned to the hobby in late 1999-2000.

MTH/Railking:

PRR B6sb 0-6-0 (PS2)

MTH/Premier (all PS2):

ATSF 3463 4-6-4

LIRR G5s 4-6-0 (repainted from PRR)

LIRR H10s 2-8-0 (repainted from PRR)

PRR L1s 2-8-2 (DAP version)

PRR I1s 2-10-0 (short tender)

Lionel:

NKP USRA 2-6-6-2 (TMCC)

PRR E6s 4-4-2 (Legacy, repainted from ATSF)

PRR M1a 4-8-2 (TMCC, pre-war style)

Anything that's either New Hope and Ivyland or Strasburg Railroad. Doesn't matter to me wether it's prototypical or not since those who enjoy seeing my trains run wouldn't know that anyway but they do know of the nearby Strasburg and N.H.& I. railroads. BTW, Also have two Polar Express locomotives (rtr set one and the one with whistle steam effect) and two MTH Pennsy Bantam steamers (an older freight with loco sounds and more recent proto 2 passenger sounds).

I am a steam nut. Newbie, Just have 4 locomotives, Polar express, hogwarts, the old 999 empire state 4-4-0, and The Newer Empire state 4-6-4 passenger train. The last 2 are MTH with proto sound. Eyeing a Challenger next, just can't find an o scale I like. All the ones I like are american flyer.

I understand the constraints & currently using small steam.  I am looking to make some changes.  Which turntable are you using & how do you like it?  Thanks, John

My principle era of interest is the steam to diesel transition period inclusive of 1947 through 1957.  But step back a decade to include the Southern Crescent Limited and first Southern diesels.  And even step back further to include the Erie Triplex and Angus.  My steam roster only numbers 55 engines including the very first Lionel 2025 that Santa brought Christmas 1947.  All but five are scale size.

The Pennsy is the primary road.   The Pennsy roster numbers 25 steam engines if you include the “John Bull.”  All Pennsy classes are represented (multiples of Es, Ks, Ls, & Ss) except five (Ds, CCs, Fs, HCs,  &Ns).

Moving to Charlotte in the late 70s during the heyday of the Claytor brothers Camelot of Steam excursion, I got hooked.  So roster includes Southern 4501 & 2716, N&W 611 & 1218, UP 844, SP 4449, PM 1225 w/extra PE tender, NKP 765 and PRR 1361.

But then there are the truly unusual or BIG.  This includes a Big Boy, UP 9000 series, C&O M-1, and on order a Jawn Henry.

Lionel Pm 1225 Berkshire   I work the the 1 to 1 model that's why.

Lionel Sante Fe Berkshire   Got it for Christmas from my boys a few years back

K Line Allegheny 1601        I climbed in her cab when I was in 3rd grade and fell in love with her size.

Lionel Baby C & NW Hudson   I like it

Lionel Baby Nickle Plate Berkshire  Just acquired

I would rather run steam but I do run diesels to test the layout so if a disaster happens I won't hurt any of the above.

Ron
