I've been sorting things in my collection and have a question about the set box used for the 1948 Atlantic Passenger Set. The Tufts book lists possible boxes for the 4803A as B1049 or B1132. The B1049 box was used for several sets, so I have a few examples. However, when I experiment, I can not determine how the components of a 4803A set could possibly fit in such a box. If I fit all the long car boxes and the locomotive box I don't have room for a box of curve track.
Does anyone have an example of this set in a B1049 box? Does everything fit? Is it possible that the track was included "loose"?
I do have a mint 4803A set, but it came in a B1164 box. As a 12" wide box it accomodates the long car boxes and leaves room for the track box. While this set box is not "documented", several collectors have examined it and opined that it is as delivered.
I'm just curious. Any originals out there in the B1049 Box? It seems like the B1048 box used for the 4603 sets would be a better fit. Of course, nothing Gilbert did surprises me. I guess that's part of the fun.
