Not sure if "rivet counter" is a compliment or an epithet in this hobby?
I've been into toy and model trains in excess of forty years. From what I've seen, "Rivet Counter" is neither a compliment or an insult.
It's the words around the expression that make it one or the other. Same goes for the term "Collector".

I want to personally thank Alan for taking the time, on a Saturday, to go through this tread to clean it up without deleting the whole thread. I think there are a lot of good points here, and if you don't understand why your post was deleted than I think you need to go back and see the link in Texas Pete's post. Unfortunately, some have not taken the hint and this thread may be deleted anyway.
Tact? My apologies for offending anyone. I didn't realize we were in a model railroading "safe space."

It's a good thing this is a moderated forum, otherwise I might be tempted to say "safe space" has nothing to do with it. This is about good manners and civility, concepts which obviously are beyond your comprehension.

Yeah, I wonder about the wheeling and dealing done for movie licensing. I always thought a James Bond set would have gone over well. The Aston Martin on a flat car with a gen-yoo-ine ejector seat, maybe that auto-gyro too, the chase car with shark-skin suit villains in sunglasses......... I digress; back to prototypical toys.....
There's definitely a market for fantasy schemes - it's called second hand and purchased for 50% less than original price.
These are great for REPAINTS
I get some of the novelty stuff, things like Thomas the Tank engine pieces, or maybe an operating car with the coyote chasing the road runner. Items like Beatles or Sponge Bob Squarepants trains, not so much. (I do like the cartoon, I think its very funny).
What I don't understand is why some folks seem so hostile or are so aggravated by those sort of items.
Why rain on another person's picnic?
To each their own.
I'm not into the Coca Cola, Nascar, sport teams etc on trains but don't disagree with people that do. It's your railroad and you run what you like. My biggest disapointment in a lionel train was the 3419 helicopter car when I was 7 years old back in 1961. The TV commercial showed the boy launching it and it took off and soared gracefully. I picked one up after Christmas at I think Gimbels for 99 cents and when I got home and launched it, it shot up in the air spinning out of control falling to earth killing everyone on board lol. I do have a couple of them today but they are only shlef queens.

If it's any consolation to you, the original 3419 works better than the newer models.
Yes but you know at age 7 you believe everything you see on TV lol.
I totally get the concept of the Little Pet Shop and Dinosaur trains. It's fun playthings that move, made for young children. What I don't understand is the same concept designed for adults (Beatles, Elvis, Thomas Kincaide...). But to each his own, and I just skip those parts of the catalog... Because frankly, they're still churning out more stuff than I could ever buy!

"when are you going to grow up and stop playing with trains?" I sure hope I never do.
Oh Lord, that is such a outstanding remark IMO.
I think the answer for me is......When I'm dead!

Witty comeback: "When are you going to stop being a judgmental busybody ?!"
