For a set with an SD70ACe, 4 TTUX cars and an ETD a reasonable price would be $700.00.  i.e. $400.00 engine and 4 cars @ $75.00 each. No Track or trans.

Good Day Lou,

For a S Scale Set presenting a SD70ACe or ES44AC and four cars $700.00 to $800.00 would work. Are you considering new S Scale Flat Cars? Die Cast Spine cars would be fantastic. I would suggest prototypical 53’ Trailers to keep in the theme of a modern day train.

As you know the B&O Trailer Jet trains were pulled by GP30's. Are you considering the GP30 for S Scale?

Thanks for asking!

Regards,

Frank

I would pay 700-800 for a set. But for that price, I would want it to be prototypical. TTUX and B&O would be 2 different eras. An early second generation diesel would be the newest locomotive that would be appropriate. TTUX and a SD70, the trailers/containers would have to be contemporary. There is a price point where I would abandon an offering if it was fantasy.

Don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, I do support the LCCA's UP Baldwin set even though the locomotive should not have the flag paint scheme on it. It should have the slogans "Route of the Streamliners," or "Serves the West" on the hood or cab sides. Even though no Baldwin may have worn a slogan, at least it is era sensitive to the model. But I intend to buy the set anyway because I welcome another Flyer set promoted from another source. However if the set is going to go upscale, I'd need authenticity to pull the trigger.

Sorry, I guess I am just no fun. But flirting with a grand price tag, it has to be worth it to me.

Here is a quick image I found on the web of an Athearn HO EMD SW that illustrates the slogan. Sorry, it loaded twice.

SD70ACe in CSX colors and a 5 runner with Schnider 53' would be worth $1,000 tops if the 5 runner is new and scale as well as the trailers.  Crown would be another truck company name that would work.  Unless CSX comes out with its own heritage fleet I'd stick with what you see running today.  I have to wonder why a 4 unit TTUX set unless this is what you are talking about.

Now a four unit set of these with a modern engine would tune my piano......

I think I would agree that CSX might be a better way to go for a "scale" Legacy set with either the SD70 or GE ES44.  $700-$900 would probably be a good price range, less track and power supply.

As Greg mentioned, unless CSX does their own heritage program, (which isn't likely and if they did, I'm sure Lionel would want it in the regular catalog) I'm afraid I wouldn't have much interest in a high-end "scale" fantasy set.

Here's another possibility the EMD/Cat Demo SD70Ace:

emd-cat SD70ACe

I don't know if it's actually pounding the rails or just doing the trade-show circuit, but does exist and is a striking paint job.  I could "bend" my interest for it.

A four unit set of modern flat cars and loaded with Cats would be cool.

Greg

Like this?

Caterpillar shipments are carried regularly by NS. I have several NS videos which were filmed in Georgia. They show quite a few trains with flat cars carrying Caterpillar machines in their consists.

Good Evening Rusty,

I think your idea has great potential! As you know Lionel already has the S Scale SD70ACe that can be painted up as cab number 1201. Then Lionel could create the some TTX flat cars. And since Lionel has the connection on die cast models, how about presenting a scale 1:64 Die Cast Caterpillar Dozer, Grader, Excavator and Backhoe for the loads on the flat cars?

On a side note:  I think the Caterpillar Dealers would even buy this set for customers!

Frank

You may be right, and then again you may not be right.  Just saying that it's very common for for one of two or more competing firms to be granted exclusive rights for certain product lines and/or certain areas of a product line.  Thomas and Friends is a godo example, and I could name many more.

Good Day Lou,

Would the LCCA set be presented late this year or 2014? One more suggestion, a SD70ACe or ES44AC with four Auto Racks! The auto racks would be a first in S Scale. Lionel could produce the same inventive coupler type that was offered on their O Scale auto racks but make it S Scale. This allowed for operations on tighter curves.

Frank
