I admit I have zero experience with AF smoke units. I need to install a new wick/element and instructions to do so. What would a smoke unit kit consist of? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Look up, The Gandy Dancer. AF is one of Dave's 'Pets'.
I recognize the name. Does he fix them?
AF smoke rebuild kits are usually about 2' of angel hair(fiberglass) with the appropriate winds of nichrome wire . Instructions are usually included. How may you need?

Port Lines sells the repair kits, does the repair if you send the chamber and also sells working units (used I think).

Here are three places to purchase kits to rebuild American Flyer Smoke units, Bill Parr's Hobby Supplies, Doug Peck Portline Hobbies or Barts pneumatics Manufacture of Super Smoke for American Flyer Trains. These includes instructions.

I have repaired several AF smoke units using the modern era Lionel resister (27ohm). It just fits with careful bending of the end wires. I read the 'how to' many years ago in a book about tips on Flyer repairs. They seem to work OK. I've had none fail.
I ordered the parts I need from Portline hobbies. I'll check out the instructions they have on line. Thanks for all the suggestion guy's
