Would it be possible to add whistle steam, to a Legacy Steam Engine that doesn't have it from the factory? Say one of the Lionel Legacy 2 truck Shays!

I don't think there would be physical room for a new smoke unit and tubing in a narrow boiler like that. Plus all the electrical changes that would be needed.
The sticking point is probably getting the digital signal to signify the whistle is blowing, I don't know that it's generated by default by all Legacy boards. After that, you'd still have to contend with the issue Chuck mentions, which is simply lack of space.
I've heard that some Lionel locomotives have whistle steam with one smoke unit, but I don't know exactly how they accomplish that.
If the command structure of Legacy is ever documented for 3rd party use, then you might be able to decode the serial data and determine when the whistle was blowing.
I bought this for my grandson, and he plays with it religiously with a TMCC controller, and this little loco runs great. I have never purchased a :egacy controller yet as there seems to be many problems with the new stuff. I just wondered why and an $800.00+
Lionel Legacy Locomotive wouldn't have at least working steam whistle, and bell, guess, he will have to be satisfied with what he's got!......Thanks again for your info and take on this over priced, inder equipped Lionel Engine.........Brandy
Its not a trivial upgrade. Besides finding a way to trigger the steam from the whistle, space would be a problem on this engine. I have found very small fans that would work on larger engines but can't see how they would fit in a shay along with the associated plumbing.

I been working on this for my daylight... If theres room its possible..I got it all figured out on the daylight. Unforanlty its not cheap you have to spend about 150 bucks in parts to do it.. They program the main board different on the smoking whistle engines.. Even though they have the plugs on the board for the smoke unit it does not get power... When i take the board out of my 3759 santa fe and put it in my daylight .. It has a smoking whistle...
I hope that you will take the the times to show all of us on the forum your how-tos, as well as pictures/video of the finished product. Lionel Legacy is a much talked about option at our club meetings, O Guage, as well as the HO Guagers. I ttuly appreciate your heads up on this subject. I thought that if you wanted all of the proverbial bells/horn/whistle smoke, you would have to be sure that the new Legacy product offered or buy one that did. This is exactly why Mike Regan went into business. He designed a product that all wanted, but couldn't add on, but could, after his "thinking out of the box", became a finished product for sale, not unlike ERR. I don't think they (ERR) will evolve any further than they have, because they're owned now by Lionel...............Thanks again jojofry...............Brandy

We just released new sound systems, and with them new sound sets. We plan a new product offering next year. Still workin' on the railroad...
Maybe ERR will evolve just a bit more.
Would be nice to purchase an upgrade to add whistle smoke on older legacy units... add a smoke unit and a driver board, drill a hole, add a tube, and your set.
It would be nice, but don't hold your breath.
Guys, I got it, I've got it!!! I been switching between CNN News Group, and the Fox News channel, bout all day. We get a majority of Bleeding Heart Libelals into our club, and any other selfserving special interest groups we can get to like electric trains! We can get them call Obama at the White House and get support to get the wanted and needed electronics from Lionel/Err/MTH and anybody else we want to design and build our wants vs needs. Then we should be able to get our wants list filled, enlieu of having/getting what business world wants you to have. **** of a Plan!
