CSX named one of nation’s best corporate citizens

Published: April 23, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Corporate Responsibility Magazine has named CSX one of the country’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens, the only Class I railroad to be included on the list. CSX was 99th on the list.

The magazine’s best corporate citizens are selected based on an analysis of publicly available information, including websites, 10-K filings, sustainability reports, and programs. The magazine examines nearly 320 data elements across seven categories, including climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights, and philanthropy.

I'd place this in the same category as the annual "Best companies to work for", "Most admired companies" and so on.

A few years back, I attended a small gathering of fund managers that was hosted by a well know Wall Street transportation analyst.  This gentleman frequently brings his institutional clients together with real rail shippers so his folks can pick our brains a bit.  After his clients have had their opportunity to ask questions, the rail shippers are given a chance to question the fund managers.  I asked them how important a factor things like the "Best Corporate Citizen" or a high ranking on the Dow sustainability index played in their investment decisions.  The 6 fund managers in the room all looked around at each other and after a fairly pregnant pause, one of them said he would speak for the group.  The answer was "we could care less about stuff like this".
