This old cast gondola was a recent ebay purchase.  I stripped off the old paint, removed the cast handrails and added bent brass grabs.  Couplers are now kadees; the trucks are the original cast bettendorfs with plastic wheels that came with the car.  Decals are from a Santa Fe reefer set.  They are not prototypically correct.kh gon 1kh gon 2kh gon 3kh gon 4kh gon 5

The car is about 41' 6" long with separate sides, ends and bottom.  Assembly is via 4 screws up from the bottom.  The initials K H appear to have been cast into the bottom.  Can anyone provide the manufacturer and the era?  I'm thinking 1950s.

I wonder if the "KH" is an owner's mark that was put in by Ken Henry.  Besides building locomotives, Ken built many cars for the traveling B&O O Scale railroad that wound up in Cincinatti and on his own model railroad.  As Bob2 said above there were various suppliers in the late 1930s and 1940s offering cast aluminum kits and some of the patterns were passed from one owner to another.  The construction reminds me of Scalecraft.  I built a 50 foot NYC gondola offered by Scalecraft a couple of years ago that used the same assembly methods for the castings.  That model, with a scrap load, now resides in a good friend's steel mill complex.

The car is a very nice example of classic O Scale that you don't see every day.
