Would love to hear a report on the show in Lena, IL last weekend. And how about the Hi-Wheelers show that was in Palatine at Harper College?
I wanted to go to Lena but didn't make it. I have really enjoyed that show in the past.

Other than wheaton shows...is that possible?!{you have to read the sarcasm, slash, joke there from me}.
So - do tell folks who went...are the trains/bargins...I mean grass greener elsewhere?

In my opinion, the DuPage County Fairgrounds, i.e. Wheaton events are NOT "shows" but For Sale & Swaps. The true shows mentioned by Chugman, above generally do not allow much selling of any kind, and thus are true "Train Shows".
We had a great show in Santa Clara, CA over the weekend. There were 7-10 layouts of various gauges and several rows of for sale tables. I had fun.
I'm guessing that you had a lot better weather than we did too. We had snow and bitterly cold temperatures.

I'll put a plug in for the Annual Asheville Model Train Show in North Carolina. It was IMO a very nice event. Many vendors and Many lay outs all sizes. csams club had a nice lay out to show from there club as well. I don't know how many were in attendance in the two day show, but to me it was big time in our area of NE TN.

We had some rip-roaring rain, and crazy, aggressive, impatient drivers on the freeway, but the temps were in the 60's, so no one complained.

That would be an interesting concept around these parts....and while wheaton does have "a few" layouts running...it ain't much to be honest....mostly sales{never seen trading/swapping- but I guess it can happen}. What you describing to me would be an open house{no sales} of a train modeling group.

Not really. Look into the "Train Show" put-on at the Lyons Township High School. I think it may be the Saturday of March 15th. They are NOT allowed to sell anything there; it is ALL model train layouts, of many different scales..
I believe it is the 29th of March.

"Traveling open house" then....hows that take on it?
The All American Train Show in at LTHS in LaGrange IL is March 29th, 2014.
Being that it is in one location, once a year, it is indeed a "train show" and not a "traveling open house." Just because there's no selling is no reason not to see what your fellow model railroaders are up to.
And, it's 5 bucks cheaper admission than High Wheeler...
