Just guessing here, but it would seem that these open car carriers only hauled new cars to interchange points with over the road car carrier trucks like we have here just South of Chester PA,   sooooo....... a full 50% of the time that the auto carriers were traveling over the rails they were empty returning for another load of new cars.

As has been said, "There is a prototype for everything".

Would believe you are correct, they had to be traveling some distance empty after unloading. If not designed for a specific vehicle would they head towards the nearest assembly line to be loaded with those models?

Or half full like this one: https://vignette.wikia.nocooki...st?cb=20140928233940

And mixed brands if assembled at the same factory: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...8225@N05/43176201950

I guess one could nit pick the arrangement and run twin trains;   full loads out, empty loads back as per coal operations.

Auto rack sales could double .

Have visited many HO layouts that do exactly that. especially with coal loads and gondolas.

It's the one time they actually search for duplicate number cars!
