With the popularity of Lionel's Polar Express line in O and  S gauges, I can't understand why no one has produced Christmas elf figures for those of us modeling P.E. and/or Holiday related scenes. Why no manufacturer has jumped at this opportunity is beyond me. Lionel markets caribou, wolves, rabbits and even Santa figures while MTH and Bachmann do reindeer and Santa figures even Hallmark, Dept. 56, Carlton Cards, etc. make elves, Santas, reindeer, etc., so why hasn't someone produced elves specifically for Oand S scales? The tooling can't be that difficult or expensive and btw,  Lionel already has elves they've created their O and S gauge P.E. handcars as has Bachmann for its Santa/elf trolley handcar, so why not adapt those molds to standing elf figurines? Both Santa and elves are royalty free in the public domain, so why are generic Santas plentiful but his companion elves aren't? Why doesn't someone make them???

If those companies making elf figurines don't want to be bothered with O and S scale size ones, this might be a profitable niche for a company such as Menards to get into.

BTW, how many of you would buy elves, if they were available?

Here is a video from YouTube (not mine):

At the 3:17 mark, the builder talks about how they made elves out of beads and pipe cleaners. Perhaps your local craft store could assist you.

Also, a nice disappearing train effect, worth watching the whole vid.

Here is a link to a craft site that shows how to make similar figures:

Yes, the elf market is small.

Seriously, I've wondered the same thing about the lack of elf figures. I'd been looking for elf figures to put in fireman's positions on engines with Santa as engineer, and in cupolas of Christmas cabooses, etc., but they're hard to find. To get an elf fireman for my main Christmas steamer, I finally resorted to buying an MTH Santa and elf handcar and taking off the elf.

Jim Elster's Scenic Express has one, which is very nice, available on his site @:

"Figures & Accessories: O Scale, Choohooligans, #G6010, 'O-Scale Elf, the Pudgy One'." It's so nice/cute I included it on a Lionel layout at F.A.O. Schwarz, NYC, at one time. I realize you can't see him, but he's in the truck cab alongside Santa, making a delivery. I've included these photos just for the fun of it all. )

Also, under "Figures & Accessories," Jim has available a really nice "Santa & Helper" (1/43) #PR65335

Handyandy, I know you're just messin' around, but if you really wanted such a figure, I'd recommend you consider a figure by Jim Elster's Scenic Express:

@"Figures & Accessories: O Scale: Choohooligans: #CG0031, 'Greaser Dude'," perhaps not so cliche' as one might have, but certainly befitting the look, persona and era, IMO.

Finally, o scale elves are almost here!

Like other o gaugers, I have searched long and hard for o scale elves for my Christmas layout.  After not seeing what I wanted and not wanting to buy a pack of 5 items containing just 1 elf, I decided to have a custom mold of an elf made. I wanted at least 100 for my layout and got a couple of hundred extra made. Not knowing what the demand for these may be, I may be able to get extra if there is interest.

The mold that is being made is based off the attached image.  Elves with brown hair, black hair, and yellow hair were made (so not every elf has the  same hair color). There might be some slight variations as I am doing some last minute changes (having the belt be all brown, no yellow buckle).  The height will be approximately 1.125" - 1.25".

I expect them to arrive at the end of October and can begin shipping them domestically the first week of November.

Introductury prices

three for $10.80 +$2 shipping          ($3.60 each not factoring shipping)

six for $19.20 INCLUDING free USPS 1st class shipping      ($3.20 each)

nine for $25.20 INCLUDING free USPS 1st class shipping       ($2.80 each)

twelve for $28.80 INCLUDING free USPS 1st class shipping     ($2.40 each)

(the prices above are 20% off list price and will be limited in duration)

I am offering this discount to o gauge forum members before I put the remainder on ebay. Introductory prices will be for bagged elves, that is they are sealed in a bag from the manufacturer but contain no fancy packaging or "gift" type box.  I tried to keep production costs as low as possible. One extra benefit of the introductory price (besides the lower price!) is that I will have the ability to give a custom number of elves to buyers in the first few weeks.  So if you want 6 elves with brown hair and 3 with black and no elves with yellow hair that is completely possible.  The elves will be bagged 3 per bag (1 of each hair color) but I am happy to break bags if someone has a need for a particular hair color.

If anyone is interested please let me know.  I understand that people aren't likely to commit to a purchase until a picture of the final product is available but if there is anyone out there like me who want 100 of these things, I need to know that by Thursday before the elves in China finalize production. This isn't a "preorder" announcement or solictation of funds yet, I expect to have plenty available in quantities of three to a dozen - but again I need to know if anyone is interested in 50+.  Once they arrive, I will be able to accept payment via check/money order (sorry, no paypal).

Stay tuned.

Thanks Tom
