I jave a number of Intermountain hoppers as well as Atlas die cast and a few Lionel Die cast. Someone has a quantity of MTH hoppers they want to sell me on line but I have been told that MTH hoppers are narrower than Atlas or Lionel Die cast....or maybe MTH made different versions. Can anyone share any thoughts?

MTH Premier 2-bay fishbelly hoppers are a good scale model of a Western Maryland prototype. MTH has done these in several paint schemes. Coal loads that fit Intermountain/Atlas 55 ton USRA hoppers also fit the MTH fishbellies. I can't speak about any other MTH hopper designs.
Not all hoppers were the same size in real life so I wouldn't worry too much about a little size difference, but that's just me.
Go to MTH's website and pull open a catalog as the exact measurements are listed for each piece of equipment in length x width x height format.

I have four MTH Railking four bay hopper cars. They are scale, same size as my four bay die cast Lionel and K-Line cars. All MTH Premier hoppers are scale. Ask the seller for more info on the cars.

Real hoppers - like many other freight cars - can indeed vary in length and height, but vary only slightly in width, if at all (meaningfully). Most RK and other "traditional" model freight cars are too narrow, though that isn't deadly, sometimes.
As older Premier tooling has worked its way down to RK, it has become possible to get scale cars in the Yellow Boxes, I believe. Sometimes.
Purple Box (Premier) items are always (nominally) 1:48.
Can not speak for the MTH hoppers but I own 5 of the Premier 50' Hycubes and they are slightly narrower 6 scale inches [!/8"] and slightly lower same 6 scale " [1/8"] this difference is obvious when coupled to any standard Weaver or Atlas box car for width and the Atlas 60' hycubes for height, I see these cars all the time on the CSX river line. Bear in mind accurate scale dimensions are a relative thing when it comes to the principal 3 rail mfgrs. JMO
