My Williams Santa Fe F-unit has begun to blow its horn spontaneously after operating for a few minutes. If I turn off the power and reverse the locomotive the horn goes silent until I sequence  it forward and the horn blares again. If I shut the unit down and wait a minute or two , the locomotive goes forward with no horn--for a few minutes-- and then starts sounding again! The power source is a Variac transformed down to 24 volts and has no whistle button! WTF is going on. I might remove the shell and disconnect the horn--as long as I don't screw so nothing else up.

I use variacs in my test benches. It should produce pure sine waves, no DC to trigger horns. If you have a multimeter put it across the variac output and set it to DC volts. If you don't see more than a few millivolts of DC you have a problem with your sound board. If you see more than say 25 millivolts of DC there is some sort of problem with the variac.
