I have a Williams scale GG1 and the lead truck will not track well.  I have checked some earlier posts and have not found anything definitive.  The engine will go fine on straights, but the leading truck will come off on curves and switches which are 054 or larger.   I have looked at Williams diagrams and cannot tell if there are any springs between the trucks and body.  Anys suggestions?

Well, the lead truck and the rear truck are the same truck, ….does the condition still exist, or does it follow that particular truck when you flip the engine around and run it reverse first. Also look at both trucks and see what’s possibly different between the two,….look for silly things: bent axle, jammed up wheel, bent truck frame, missing parts, parts in the wrong order, missing hardware, etc, etc,….if still unsure, take a pic of the offending truck upside down, and we’ll have a looksy around…😁

I have one that I converted to TMCC command a number of years ago, I just popped it on the track and ran it around the mainline a few times in each direction.  The mainline has a curved switch, two double-slip switches, and a few standard switches, all Ross.  Ran in both directions without a hitch.  I'm all O72 or larger.  I've run this on O42 without issue, but I don't have anything like that now.

I looked at the trucks while running without the shell on and it appears that the derailments occur when the problem truck is in the leading position.  But both trucks seem to have a lot of play.  Would a bigger spring help solve the problem? First two photos of problem truck and next two are of the ok truck.

I agree with above posts that this locomotive will run on 042 curves without issue.  I used to run mine on 027 profile Lionel tubular track with 042 curves pulling Atlas 21" Horizon cars without issue.  The overhang was a bit much, but I was running trains in a small apartment at the time and didn't care.  It worked!

Hopefully putting the spring in the right position solves your issue!
