I'm wiring up my new layout having been thrown out of the basement and into a spare bedroom a few years ago. With this O27 tubular layout, I've been accumulating K-Line O42 low-profile switches so I could use fixed voltage in lieu of the Lionel's which used track voltage. I've tested them as laid out, and they all work, so now I'm ready to permanently connect all my bus lines to my transformers.

Should I use a separate transformer for the switches or am I safe connecting it to the fixed voltage post of one of the transformers powering the track? If one of the transformers powering tracks, which transformer would you suggest? One of the two LWs powering the two mainlines or the TW powering my yard?

My options for a separate transformer include a 90W Williams transformer, a PW 1033, and a modern Lionel BW. I need one or two of them for my lighted buildings and some accessories, but could commit one to the switches if necessary.

I know how to phase the transformers and use a common bus for the ground/neutral and realize I only need one power wire to the switches. Just want help with what to use as the power source.

Thanks to any vets for recommendations.

I used ten K-Line O42 O-gauge switches on my L-shaped layout with a Lionel 135-watt "brick" for track power and a separate MTH Z1000 transformer dedicated to switches and accessories via its 14v output routed to a distribution panel with wiring to each item. Works great.

The K-line switches provide a separate terminal for the 14v input wire to the switch motor.  Fortunately, electricity doesn't care whether the brands of hobby transformers are made by the same manufacturer. You already know about phasing, so you are good to go.

Of course, a larger wattage transformer (Lionel KW or ZW) is another option; both these venerable transformers have a 14v output.  Hobbyists who favor the classic hands-on mode of train operation often prefer the pre-TMCC transformers.

The modern equivalent of a Lionel 1033 is the retro-styled CW-80 unit, which has a separate output for accessories.

Carry on ...
