Its been a while since I last posted, but I continue to follow the insights on O Guage Forum on nearly a daily basis.
Its been 24 months of intermittant progress but I'm now finally at the stage of laying track and wiring the layout. I've attached a pdf of my wiring plan (at a basic level) for context with my questions below, and also for any general feedback / insights you may have:
- A basic question: Is a mix of "star" and "bus" possible (and recommended) whereby the 'hot' (powered) distribution lines radiate from the power panel and the common/ground is deployed as a bus line that loops (but does not connect for a true ring) the layout? I've illustrated the difference with the wiring plan for Power District 1 (slides 1 and 2 of the PDF). If it is possible to use a bus for the ground/common, then that one bus could serve the feeder lines for all four of the power districts, correct?
- Block power management: From the posts and reviews, it appears that BPC2's functionality is mainly to simulate a toggle switch capability within the Cab2 remote. If that were the case, I am leaning toward just setting up a panel with the labled toggle switches as that may be easier for me to follow than quickly getting to the right blocks/codes etch while operating trains. Am I missing anything in terms of its functionality / will I regret forgoing the BPC2s for the power district?
- Recommendations for power source for the accessories?: I have 2 PH 180's for the first two power districts. I have an old 80 watt lionel transformer from the 80's as well as a ZW of which only 1 of the two sides is operable. I intend to have a small city/village with lighted interiors and street lights etc on the layout, etc. I have a TPC 400 that I intended to use to support conventional operation on the track. Is it possible to use the TPC to divert some power at a constant voltage to the accessories (from one of the PH 180s)?
- Finally - Placement of TVS diodes: I have seen these located on the transformer terminals as well as on the terminal blocks connecting feeders to the distribution wires. Is there a preferred location/placement?
Many thanks in advance,
Scot
