Up until about 4 years of being able to run my trains using the DCS WIFI Unit, it suddenly became unusable. Since I prefer the handheld remote , I used the WIU primarily when the grandchildren were running the trains.

One day after starting up about a year ago, it suddenly would no longer connect to the TIU. Nothing had changed since the previous time it was used. I have tried various things, but to no avail.

I haven’t used it since hoping an MTH software update would appear and solve the problem. I have tried different Apple iPads and iPhones, but no go and not even the latest software update worked.

If I select the “HOME” switch and connect to my home Wi-Fi, as I always had done, I can select “add new trains, new MTH, and it appears to be reading, but then I get the message that “NO TIU Found”.

If I select the MTH switch, and select the MTH network, I immediately get a “no internet connection” message, so it appears that I can connect to the network but there is no internet connection available.

I also tried another TIU. (Version H and L) and switched out the USB cable, Still no luck!

The handheld Remote and TIU perform perfectly.

Short of buying a new WI FI unit, any other ideas of what to try?

Ron,

I have 3 WIUs on my layout so I understand your pain when it doesn't work right.  I run mine with the MTH switch, meaning there is an MTH network for which my iPad, iPhone to connect.  I assume your WIU is connected to your TIU.

When you power up your TIU, the WIU should also power up and you should see a series of lights flashing, and when it's done cycling you should see some lights still on.  What do you see when it's done cycling?  Which are on? Which are off and which are blinking?

With the power still on, next from your apple device go to your wireless networks and connect to the MTH network.  You will need the password as well.  I am not remembering it off the top of my head but it think its MTHDCSWIFI.

Once your apple device connects to the network you should be able to read the roster of what you have on the track.

Hope that helps,

John

Well, the second error with the MTH network is understandable, if you connect to the MTH WIU directly, you indeed have no Internet connection.

The first error sounds like where the problem lies.  FWIW, connected to my home network is how I run, and that works fine.  I'd probably suggest a factory reset of the WIU and just start the process like you're installing a new WIU.

When the WIU is set to HOME mode, it is trying to or is connected to your home WiFi network which your phone/tablet is already connected to. Your phone/tablet will communicate to your home wireless router and in turn relay the signal (wirelessly) to the WIU.  All devices will have internet access.

In MTH mode, the WIU will create its wireless network that your phone/tablet will connect to and directly send information to the WIU. your phone/tablet nor your WIU will have internet access in this mode.

If your WIU is close to your Internet Wireless router, you can connect the two devices with an Ethernet cable and your phone/tablet will communicate wirelessly to the Wireless Router and in turn relay the signal to the WIU using that cable. Takes all of the guesswork of connecting your WIU to your home network and/or connecting your phone/tablet to the WIU directly.
