I run a single engine pulling 4 C&NW Bi-levels. As a child in the 60s and 70s riding this every week, I never rode it with a B or additional A. I tried to put the C unit in the layout to run. It says the engine is already in the remote, but does not respond to the A unit's commands in the remote.
Is it possible, and how to run this unit as a single stand alone locomotive? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure the tethered ABA sets have to at least have the Lead A unit on the track since that is the one with the brains even though the C is fully powered.

IIRC the trailing A unit can't run by itself. These have cables connecting them together correct?
You can only run the lead A unit by itself. You need to connect the trailing C unit A to the lead A in order for it to work. You have 2 powered A units but only one controllable A unit the trailing unit is slaved to the lead unit

I only have 1 set. I wanted to share the wear and tear on both engines. I will look online for examples of the consist running ABBA, ABA or AA.
