In case you have missed it, we are working on our first York, PA historic building shadowbox. It will be the D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co. building that used to be on Princess Street. D.F. Stauffer is credited with inventing the animal cracker.

Our shadowbox model will measure approximately 18-3/4" long by 9-3/4" tall by 1" deep. In addition to being constructed true to size at 1/4" = 1'-0", the building signage will be painted on using a multiple laser scored masking and painting technique. The signage will be painted on top of the brick scoring to achieve a very realistic finish.

Ever since visiting York for the TCA meet I have been intrigued by the architectural and commercial variety. Each release will be made in limited production with no more than 100 made, produced in runs of 10 at a time. A new building will be done for each York TCA train meet.

The CAD work is near completion and production will begin begin this coming week for availability at the TCA Train Meet in October.

Each model will come with the four floors individually lit using 5050 Superbrightled LED’s. The wires will be hidden in a square tube styrene chase so they are unseen if you elect to have clear glazing. The rear panel of the shadowbox is removable to allow for the addition of aftermarket interior decoration.

Each shadowbox is constructed of laser scored and cut acrylic plastic and Taskboard, and is professionally finished to be individually unique. Windows are fabricated using two layers of laser cut Lazerboard for sashes and frames. You may specify clear or translucent glazing. Fascia are built-up styrene. Each shadow box set is made at ¼” = 1’-0” scale and will be a welcome addition to your O Scale pike.

The price for each shadowbox is $125, but you can save 10% with your paid order received today or tomorrow.

I had a good time working on the text today and will be adding it to the prototype tomorrow. Here's the prototype elevation for the right side. Will most likely go with the loading dock door that is shown in an old watercolor.

I apologize for the problem. Just got off the telephone with Wix and they have identified a system-wide issue. I will be notified once their technicians have resolved the problem and will post back here when that occurs.

Thank you for your patience!

JUST RECEIVED AT NOON:

We are happy to announce that the issue: "17 September, 2018 - Wix Stores Cart Page Temporarily Unavailable" has been resolved.

The Wix support member acknowledged to me that they have a system-wide issue. I got to the cart also, but did not attempt the pay process. I am sure that they have escalated the repair.

Paul-

Still have to get cornice treatments built right, but at least the main elevation elements have come together. We should (make have to) have all of the elevation pieces cut before the end of the weekend.

Interesting tidbit- this building first caught my eye when we were just starting this shadowbox and now building journey. I saved an image to my photos, even before we did the Union Pacific Trackside Warehouse or my first visit to York TCA as an vendor. I always do a bit of a foot tour when attending the TCA Meet, working up the gumption to offer a series of historic buildings from the area. I was pleasantly surprised that me very first choice of a historic building to model was located in York.

Jim-

Give me a call in the shop tomorrow if you would like to order one at preorder pricing.

I had  a couple of requests about our York TCA preorder offer today. The preorder discount has been extended to those who called and it is now active on the website through this Sunday. When you check out your cart enter YORKF18EARLYORDER10% in the Coupon Code box and you will get 10% of all items ordered. If you want to pick up at the York TCA Train Meet in October, make sure to select that option for shipping.

Well there’s color on the elevations and tomorrow we’ll go after the building lettering. Brick has a base color and four oversprays to give it a bit of texture. The architectural details on the right side elevation will stay brownstone brown without texture to create slight bit of contrast with the brick. Cast stone banding and headers get unmasked at the end. FD4BB884-972B-47A1-8438-85C49F21584F564C178B-441D-4FEC-B139-4382D0C9377A

Here's the final prototype and we are pleased with the result. The three-step process for adding the building name produces a very realistic finished product. fullsizeoutput_3a8fullsizeoutput_3a9

I just extended the coupon code, YORKF18EARLYORDER10%, through this Friday because a couple of our customers were waiting to see the final painted version which I posted yesterday. The coupon code gives you 10% off all offerings on the website. Make sure to select York Pickup in the shipping pulldown menu if you are picking upon form us in the Orange Hall.

Note that both the shadowbox and building come lit and you have the choice of clear or translucent glazing.

At the request of one of our customers, the D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co. building is also now offered as a flat. It will have then same elevation features as the shadowbox or 6" deep building, except that it will only be about 1/4" thick/deep.

The website has been updated to include the model as a flat. You will see it either on the new product crawl on the bottom of the home page our under CityScape Flats in the Shop pull-down menu.

Well, after a week's break to visit Raleigh and take in all that IBMA and bluegrass has to offer, it is back to Ye Olde Model Shoppe! Here's what a 20-piece run of the D.F. Stauffer Biscuit Co. building looks like. We are producing 18 shadowboxes (1-1/4" deep) and two flats (1/4" deep) in this first run. By the end of the day cast stone will be painted, masked out and brick will be painted. Fourteen of them have been reserved with most getting picked up at York next week. Beat the rush and wait for the next run by ordering soon. Picking up at York also saves the dreaded USPS shipping cost.

The first step of painted building signage. The building brick color has been painted and has dried. We apply Nichiban masking tape on the three areas to be painted. We also apply a Nichiban wrap on the four edges of the piece to be engraved to make up for the laser beam width. This ensures that the elevation piece sits in the template hole correctly. In the mean time, a piece of plastic is put in the laser bed and the outline of the  elevation piece is cut and removed to create the template hole. The laser is refocused to the height of the elevation piece and the correct cutting colors are turned on/off to create the line for the red band, each aligned to a brick row. Rinse and repeat 20 times for the first run.

The next step is to paint the red color of the band.

Neat building! Neat choice!

But just to get facts straight, Stauffer's didn't invent the "animals" (traditional; no "cookie" or "cracker") They are English born, and had achieved "fad" status in kitchens there, and eventually "jumped the pond" with new immigrants.

Stauffer's was however the first company in America to pre-package them for their consumers here.

Wikipedia has a pretty good handle on it

I keep looking at the color with one thought

Will there be a Gingerbread version made too?

What? ..It could be done

Animal cracker origin clarifications notwithstanding, we take the next step in what I think is an historically accurate model representation of one of York, PA's important businesses. Here's step 2 of the building lettering process. The red band has been painted and all 20 elevation pieces have been put back in the template hole to have the lettering laser cut in the remaining masking. The letters have been pealed off and the next step is to paint white.
