Z-4000 “Direction” button sticking

I occasionally run older locomotives in conventional and find the Track 1 Direction button sticking. It seems sloppy compared to the Track 2 button. Is this a user repairable problem. Is this a mechanical switch of some sort or a membrane or something else? This transformer dates to about year 2004.
