I have a couple of MTH Z4000 transformers with fluctuating output voltages.  One Z4000 fluctuates by +/- .5v( 1 volt swing) and another fluctuates by +/- 1.5V (3 volt swing).  The 3V fluctuation is very noticeable when running passenger cars with incandescent lighting.  I also have a 3rd Z4000 where there is no fluctuation with the output voltage.  All reading were taken at 18 volts output and with a constant 118.4 volt input.

Any suggestions on what is causing the Z4000 outputs to fluctuate and the best way to fix it.  Also, does anyone have a schematic for the Z4000 transformer.  Can't find anything on line or from MTH.

Thanks

Bob, I'm a bit behind reading posts, but here's what I know about the Z4000. I, too, noticed the poor output regulation. A quick output voltage test ran as follows: with Z4000 set for 19V output and 0.3A(magic bulb), 10 passenger cars caused the output voltage to drop to 15V @ 2.9A, the display read 14.4V. I inquired about this performance on the forum quite awhile ago and someone replyed that it was well known that the Z4000 was not well regulated. As far as schematics, if you Google "patent number 6,281,606", you will find block diagrams and schematics in the patent description.

Have fun!
