i bought one then it stoped working the red light indcating a short came on. took it over had a new cord put on they told me all voltage was right.

Tried it agin same thing red light, tried my 80 watt works fine .what could cause this it has to be the transformer, open breaker??????woody

I understand the nostalgia trip that using old transformers provides.  But, do yourself a favor and get a modern transformer.   Your trains will thank you.

 

For example mine has microprocessor controlled circuit breakers that sense a short and kick out in a couple hundred milliseconds  -greatly minimizing the damage from shorts.

 

The circuit breakers in those old transformers -- if they work at all -- are so slow that you can melt wheel sets or destroy electronics well before they kick in.
