They can't be used effectively on common ground layouts.  For some cryptic reason(probably cost), Lionel designed these to measure the current drawn off of the "U" terminals of the meter.  On a common ground layout, the amperage readings will all read the same and you have to add them up to get the total current draw.  And that's all you get - the total, not per channel.

 

For independent loops not connected in any way, they work great.

As posted in the other pw ZW thread I had good luck monitoring 5 ZWs with after-market Volt and Amp meters for 5 separate power districts[layout now dismantled]. 

As shown in the photo below i am still using two pair on a couple of 180 Powerhouses

for two power districts on my tiny attic layout. The 3rd meter in the top row is VDC for monitoring the 12 volt DC Tortoise motors.
