Being a retired city firefighter you have no idea how many accidents just like that I went to. I didn't see the train, the first thing they say, (if they are still alive) I didn't hear a horn, see lights etc. Here is a novel concept...WHEN YOU COME TO A RAILROAD CROSSING ASSUME IT IS ACTIVE, STOP AND LOOK BOTH WAYS AND WHEN IT IS CLEAR PROCEED. OH YEAH, ONE MORE THING, NEVER STOP ON THE TRACKS. By the way in case you didn't know trains can't swerve.
The main thing to remember is that is are no lifeguards around the gene pool.
Stupid kills, but not enough to really help.
There is a great need for a stupid vaccine. Of all of the vaccines they need to invent this should be at the top of the list .
I'm with you Jim!
I remember responding to a railroad incident and one of the survivors made the comment: "That train didn't even try to miss us."
"Here's your sign!"

Agreed, and obviously too late; they procreated.

There is no cure for stupid.
And, keep watching the D.C. Pork Barrel headlines....I'm sure someone, somewhere will win a grant from taxpayer largesse to pursue just such a vaccine...couched in more sophisticated terminology, of course.
Come to think of it, D.C. innoculation would be a good 'Beta Test' for it!!
That crossing is about 5 miles north of where I live and has claimed several lives in the past 10 years. Although there are no gates or crossing flashers, there is a crossing sign with a stop sign attached to it. People have found out , it's not a good place to park your tractor-trailer, it's not a good place to stop and watch girls pump gas at the station accross the street, it's not a good place to go for a walk, and now we know it's not a good place to run a stopsign. In about 3 months, that crossing is schedualed to get lights and gates as part of the Sunrail upgrade. Eventually people will figure out that it takes a passenger train doing 60 mph about 1/4 mile to stop so it's not a good idea to be in front of it . This isn't first base, no one wins this tie.
And I won't be surprised if someone else gets killed or injured at that crossing even with gates and lights installed

I'm still waiting for someone to write Common Sense for Dummys.
Anybody remember the Amtrak verses Hess gasoline truck in Ft. Lauderdale FL?
This happened at a crossing with lights and gates installed and working properly, gasoline truck was a sitting duck!
So far there is NO vacine for being stupid!

And, invariably, somebody who either lives near the crossing or was doing something nearby will come running up and declare that the train whistle was never sounded. This, of course, will be disproved by event recorder evidence, but it is just additional stupidity to pour gasoline on a plaintiff lawsuit.
