I believe Menards entry-level locomotives can run on DC voltage and their train packages come with a standard DC wall power pack, much like many of Lionel's Lionchief line. I'm guessing this new power pack is a power upgrade over the standard one - again, much like Lionel's 72 watt DC power pack is an upgrade over their standard 54 watt one that comes with their engine packages.
The snippet 'This DC-powered "brick type" power supply' is confusing.
Wouldn't it be more useful, and cost less, if the output was 18Vac?
Actually it wouldn't cost less. The pure AC transformers are just that, a lot of copper wire. The 18V DC supplies are switching supplies, that it turns out cost a lot less per VA to manufacture.
